I first saw the end of it on TNT, starting from the aliens landing their ship while high. I watched through Vampire Hunter D and part of Robot Carnival - falling asleep during the segment of the child robot walking.

TNT version, aired in the mid-1990s, removes all sexual material (Harry and the woman, Den's two encounters, etc), most of the language, and the drug references during the alien abduction segment (Zeke and his partner do not snort the white powder, though Zeke still makes his 'let your hands work the controls like you're straight' line, and a still of the snorting scene is in the closing credit montage). This version has not aired in several years; it was part of TNT's 'adult animation' nights (with an edited Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, and Rock 'n' Rule).

I watched uncut versions of Heavy Metal and Vampire Hunter D within a few years, and the "extra" material was somewhat surprising.

I did too. Saw it back in the 80s and enjoyed again recently. My wife was like WTF!!! This is a cartoon? I got a good laugh out of that.

I used to buy the French magazine Métal Hurlant in the mid 70s for the stories by some of those artists like Druillet. Moebius, etc... Was a big fan of Lone Sloane. Many of those stories were translated and reprinted in the later English version of that magazine called Heavy Metal. That where the name of the film comes from.
