Dunno what all the criticism is about. He's going through the same process we all did at some point. So what if he's 13 and his dad is helping both pay and build? It's no different than a dad showing his kid how to tune a car or build a deck. He puts in some sweat equity, spends time with dad, and gets a damn fine computer in the end.

"...But I don't believe for a second that that 13yo did all that, and hosted his own custom designed website too. right... If so, then cool, but I sorta doubt it."

I'm more surprised at the responses here, than the fact that a young kid put that all together! Damn, Anand started the same way, WTF? And I guess you don't think his dad helped him along the way?

I only read about a page and a half, but it looked legit to me! Kudos to him!

yes, you are right. He seems to be, what we all most likely can agree on, a guy with an open mind when it comes to pc's and macs.

but pc people always like to bash mac people and visa versa

You guys are all making fun of a 13 year old kid cause he had some problems setting up a PC for the first time? You telling me you didn't have any questions or problems at all the first time you did it?

He's 13, his PC works, and there's a good chance he knows more bot PC's than you did at 13. Cut him some slack.

Greetings, Kent's father here, I just wanted to thank everyone for their positive notes, comments and support regarding my son's website discussed on the anandtech.com forums here. My son has been learning web design for the past 2 years, mostly using GoLive, Fireworks and Photoshop.

I suggested to him that he document his project and build a web site showing and sharing his experiences with the internet world to hopefully help someone who may be in the same situation he was. And of course to give a little back to so many who helped him along the way.

There have been a few questions about the cost and who paid for the PC, which he built. I paid in part with additional help and support from my sons Godfather also. Total cost for the PC was just under $1,800. Comparable pre-built PCs run in upwards of $3,000. Believe me, if money was not an issue we would have just got a pre-built Dell-Dude! I have made many personal sacrifices to keep up with technology but it has been worth it I think.

My son has received tremendous support from the PC Enthusiast community. I have been extremely impressed with how many of you expressed your feelings and thoughts here.

My son has agreed to update his site later on with his observations and additional information, which he has since learned.

Again I wish to express my sincerest thanks to this group and anandtech. Best regards, Kent's Father ? BK

Hey! Cut the kid some slack. He's only 13, and he comes from being raised with a Mac as his only experience.

He certainly doesn't cover a lot of new ground for those of us who have been building our own for years, but I think his article shows a lot of good thought and organization. One of these days, he may even figure out that the system used by 9x % of the planet gives you more people to share with, but he'll learn as he uses his new toys.

Riscx,
Glad to see you here. Even though I sortof critizised your son, which was just me as a pc user talking about mac users (normal for computer users of both sorts) but I'm still very impressed, expecialy how open minded he is and how he is eager to learn. In due time I'm sure he will turn his back on macs and join our cult here

<< Actually, this kid seems a lot wiser and more mature then most of the fanboys that hang around this BBS:

<< I posted some questions on internet usergroups and many people started to get down right ugly defending their CPU of choice. I mean both CPU's run the same operating system and basically do the same thing, right? Now that I think about it, it was kind of funny. Grown men and some women too, threatening each other over a little piece of plastic, glass and metal. >>

Exactly what went through my mind as I was reading that. LOL.

I personally think that his writing is very impressive for a 13 year old also.

Edit: Now that I think about it, his writing is BETTER than a lot of people around here.

Read again.

<< After over 30 minutes of initializing and formating the drives I started the installation process. Installing Windows XP took about 10 minutes to install. Once it was installed I immediately rebooted the computer and . . . Viola! Windows XP finally booted up. Yeah! >>

Sounds very possible to me. Not to mention that he estimated the last process to have taken approximately 10 minutes.

he probably had his daddy write it for him and help him with the build. sounds too well written to be a 13 year old.

Umm.. 13-year-old is in seventh/eighth grade. I think that it is very possible that he wrote everything there himself.

I was able to write as well as he did by ninth grade, and I had learned English since seventh grade.

What's with all these pathetic "daddy" comments going on here?

I'd have to say most here are probably criticizing due to the system he was able to get at 13 I mean, he is really getting a great system for 13 years old. I can remember when I was 13, tinkering with a damn 386 or 486.

He got the same case as my new system that I just built, that case is great!

...I'm also jelous of his work area. I built mine on the kitchen floor

<< PC gave me a wierd error saying that Windows could not start because a certain file was corrupted, ahhhh. I had to reinstall Windows XP all over again. >>

Huh?

On a side note, it's a good thing that he can build a PC at 13. Means he probably won't end up working at McDonalds when he's 13. I'm gonna make sure my little brother is able to put a PC together by the time he's 10. But that's ugh... 9.5 years away.

I guess the only thing I'm wondering is, why did he have to use winblows XP, when he could have used Linux, or even Darwin? Both are more mac-like than winXP, not to mention faster and more powerful, and the fact that he could run most open source software he was using on OS X on it.

He gets interviewed for that?
2 Years ago when I was 13 I built a AMD T-Bird 900 system.
PLUS I overclocked it to 1.2GHz.
