Not that I like to see people get hurt, none did in these cases, but its funny to see that the three vehicles in the ditch and median this morning were -ALL- SUVs!!

Here in WI, we had a couple of inches of snow, enough to make the roads glazed and icy. People (especially women) in SUVs think that they can still cruise 75+MPH cause they have 4WD. I putt by them at 40MPH as they are sitting in their now stuck vehicle on their cell-phones calling a wrecker!

Hmm, is this social justification or what???

All vehicles have 4 wheel brakes, & SUV's are at a significant disadvantage due to their mass. Combine that with the exponential increase in inertia that comes with increases in velocity, & you have a recipe for disaster.

People are just f'ing stupid.

I've observed the same type of thing many times. It's usually a 4wd truck in the ditch. 4wd is no substitute for skill and common sense.

I think he meant 4WD to be four wheel drive!

Anyway I would say that a terrible proportion of those who buy 4WD or AWD vehicles do not understand even the most basic principles of how their car works. Just because you can power 4 wheels doesn't mean you'll stop any faster or turn corners any faster. All it does is help acceleration and maybe control a bit when you're skidding like a baffoon. I hate seeing people in 4WD vehicles in the snow. They think they're invincible without realizing that they're on the brink of being out of control constantly.

I know exactly what he meant, what I meant was that 4WD offers NO benefits in stopping ability, as even a lowly Suzuki Esteem has 4 wheel brakes.

I used to see that in MI. We'd get our first snowfall during the first week of October. You see a lot of cars in the ditches. Mostly ones with California, Texas, Florida plates...

4 wheel drive has no benefit whatsoever when you don't engage it. All wheel drive provides something a little better for the average schmo because they don't have to remember to pull "that other gearshift thingy" (technical housewife term).

Either way, the people are f-ing stupid theory has much validity.

I used to live on the east coast of Canada where we really get snow. I can tell you from experience that most people don't know how to use 4WD anyways. They think they can just engage it and go like snot but that will cause them to spin quick as anything. The way I was taught was to go as far as I could go in 2wd..then engage 4WD..then when you can't go any farther in 4WD...back the hell out. Thats for extreme conditions which most people will never see. I can tell you from experience its not fun climbing out the window of a fullsize truck cause the snow is up so high you can't get the door open. We once had to spend an hour digging out a 3/4 chev cause we bellied up on a snow drift and the tires lost touch with solid ground.

We used the same rules offroad. I know once I was neck deep in the water of a beaverdam trying to lock in the front hubs.
