The route for I40 into TN was 100% political. Geologist said it was the worst route, but a powerful politician got it run through HIS county.
Guy's name and story need to be posted everywhere, all over town.

Word is our power company has a crew (maybe more than one ) there helping to run a line over a river/washed out bridge. Having to use boats to float the line across to another crew to pick it up into place.

I've built a few Bailey Bridges over the years. Not ideal for long term use...but for a few months...they get the job done.

Bridges. That rings a bell.

Oh wait!!!!

I'M THE ONE building bridges. That's what my therapist says I'm building - bridges to the demons in my head.

Many people are suffering as a result of this hurricane. Where is your empathy?

It was previously when a rock slide closed it for over 6 months. But the decisions were made in the 70's, and that corrupt asshole is long dead and buried.

Maybe we should replace his headstone with a urinal, and drill a pipe into his casket right above his face...

Initially there were over 700 cell towers out, all most all because of fiber optic cables or power failure. Not sure how many towers they are, but it's a big percentage. Only one was damage to the tower itself.
Latest there are 470 or so still out of service.

An Aldi grocery store had its contents washed down the river, and people are searching the rubble or canned goods.

Out to one of the very few breweries that has been able to open, for some cold beer, and primarily for a mental health break.
It's not far from a city fire station, and saw a fire truck go by... a Raleigh NC fire truck, which is 5 hours east of here.

The FD got enough equipment and personnel from across that state to staff every station for 6 days so all the firefighters can have 6 days off to deal with their own family and homes.

Sadly, the Fire Chief seems to be the only competent administrator in the city. Mayor is dodging left and right, only at about 1 in 6 press conferences, and when there contributes squat in the way of useful info.

People with iPhones older than 14 who have been putting off upgrading if you live in a somewhat remote and/or disaster prone area it would be good to consider a newer model which has the emergency sat communication. For kids if you have parents in places like this show them how to use it.

I live at about 2500' elevation, hundreds of miles from any ocean... yet here we are humbled by a hurricane

This scene is common all over mountain areas, east and west.

There may be 40' between the edge of a road and the wall of the mountain they blasted to build the road. On the other side of the road, there may be a steep drop off, or a river. Yet all along that road will be mobile homes standing on concrete blocks. It doesn't take much rain at all to form a rushing flood to wipe out everything for miles.

That's what happened on Eastern KY a year or two back.

There's a story on one of the websites yesterday about a community that's been hit by three recent hurricanes. Some people had JUST moved out of temporary housing from Idalia only to get wiped out by this one. Yet they're talking about rebuilding in the same place again.

We have to re-think how and where we build.

I've started my application to FEMA to see if I can recover any of my costs caused by this. Got my name in the system as a start.

Figured I better try, as if tRump gets in, he will probably just dismantle it.
Hey...you might get a free roll of paper towels!

A local grocery chain, now a major player in the area, suffered lots of damage and flooding to their warehouse between Asheville and Black Mountain. Without power for too long and refrigeration system (liquid ammonia for ultra cold) and warehouse itself flooded. As you drive by it, the warehouse is about 8/10's of a mile long, no small operation.

They probably have 70+ percent of grocery stores in the area... how this will affect things remains to be seen.
