Back to original topic:

In any event, I think AMD will spin off Radeon/GPU/ATI to raise money. Whether they sell the whole thing, a %, private or public etc.. who knows. The valuation will obviously depend on what overhead is assigned to "ATI" and what is the agreement (royalty, etc..) between ATI and AMD. Otherwise, you've no idea what you're investing in.

I'd expect an investor wouldn't want to pay too much given the uncertainty of the AMD royalty revenue stream. For sure they'll insist on a clean slate and stay away from long term leases (ex Austin campus) esp stuff like the WSA. Intel is interesting because they are the only party who can be involved where x86 would not be an issue.

Unfortunately, there's a good chance AMD will make a bad deal. What else is new? So no guarantee of upside. If anything since they'll be selling the crown jewels...

Its the only explanation imo for the sudden Divisional and Koduri appt. This stuff is usually done at quarterly earnings conference.

If microsoft was to obtain ATi... i would not be surprised if they made it so you could play Xbox games on a Ati card with a special Xbox chip built in.
If they did this.... Nvidia would have issues... imagine playing a AAA Xbox title on your PC via a Special Ati Card you can buy which allows just that.

Except for unique controllers/inputs, I think the videogame industry has learned from their past mistakes with add-on HW. I think you're on to something but it will be more of a marketing thing, say with labels/stickers "XBOX ONE GAME SUPPORT/OPTIMIZED" etc. Specialized hardware never sells wells, especially if you already have a high-end card to begin with.

the xbox controller works on PC...

A Hardware check code could be implimented into the GPU like how HDCP works, which would LOCK out Nvidia cards from playing the Xbox titles itself.

This would be such a win for Microsoft considering console sales itself sucks, and people keep complaining about console hardware in lue of PC.

And since most profits are earned at the games, and not the sale of the console unit itself, this would be a complete win for microsoft if they could implement something like that.

Hell i would even grab an ATi card, so i could play my Xbox One titles on my PC without even batting an eye.

Wow why go through all that hell just to fit all that into such a small case. Space isnt that important. More than 99% of the space in any given room is technically unused.

Because you can?

Why build a massive gaming rig? Because you can. Why use a mATX case? Because you want to.
Why go SLI? Isn't a single card enough?

It's PC building. The best part about owning a PC is options. You should welcome options, not be against them. That's what makes PC's so great.

Or we can just say screw PC's, and use consoles for gaming and whatever is handed to us for computing.

Don't see it happening but it'd be interesting. I mean, I use only my xbox 360 controller for PC gaming right now. If it doesn't work a 360 controller, I don't play it. Steam Controller will be nice to open up more avenues of games to play. I may play some mouse/keyboard games later, but for now, I just avoid them. I like a controller better, more relaxing. There's just no way I can lay down comfortably and PC game like I can with a controller.

Actually the NCase M1 was a laughably easy build. The only difficulty of any kind I had was I initially tried to use a Corsair H80i in it, which absolutely wouldn't work due to radiator thickness. It looks tight but the layout was extremely well planned by the designers. I have a 600w sfx psu, Corsair H100i, four ssd/hdd's, and a blu ray drive stuffed in mine.

the nano was not out 1 year ago.

I never said it was out one year ago. Shintai said it was no better than products that were available one year ago, which is bollocks. AMD has good GPU products. What they haven't done is converted products into sales.

If you took AMD's entire lineup from 290X on up and swapped it with Nvidia's within the same time period, Nvidia would outsell AMD anyway.

And i would NEVER call a 650 dollar video a performance per dollar, which the fury nano is.

I never said anything about performance per dollar, either. I did mention performance/watt, which is quite good for the Nano. It also reaches higher overall performance levels than other small cards within the same performance/watt envelope, such as the 970 or 970 Mini.

But yeah the Nano price is just too rich for my blood. That's where GPU prices are going thesedays. Better get used to it.

It's an interesting idea. I'm not sure how well the software would transition over to Windows 10, with or without a special chip being built into an expansion card.

At 12.6L its not so small. But it shows why it cant get smaller and you sacrifice a lot on essentially close to nothing compared to MiniITX cases that supports full size cards.

M.2 SSD, no optical, external PSU brick (DC2DC in case) and its suddenly what. 7 Litre?

What case is this? I searched for ctCU Mini and didn't have any luck. Thanks!

It's okay. Yes, like many threads around here, this one has begun a meandering process.

As for acquisition rumours . . . interesting idea, but let's see some money change hands. Intel + AMD combined would be x86 vs. ARM time, and I know which team I'm on. Bring it, ARMy.

Mm... And the true underdog VIA has already that hybrid of x86 and ARM ready to see the light...

Actually, to get down to (roughly) 7 litres, you only have to give up the optical drive, you can still keep the internal PSU and a couple of 2.5" drives:

Ironically though, this case can actually take a full-length GPU.

Of course this case is pretty damn niche (and not available yet).

So you dont believe in your "money flowing in" statement anymore?
I still believe, as it is my observation of what happened on the friday. But as I'm a proponent of short impulse trades my whole trading philosophy is built around the assumption, that depending on the type of influence such moves might be of a short nature and the risk of holding any longer in that direction increases quickly.

Just look at the reaction to the Fed yesterday.

Microsoft were considering spinning off the Xbox business, why buy AMD for it?

The key to getting the case this small is the PCIe riser.

If MS spin off the X Box business it ends into another SEGA, won't last a generation and they will dissapear.

AMD is dead in that side...

Maybe Apple can buy them since they have pretty decent GPU and force Sony to move to nVIDIA.

Pretty much yeah, although you can get relatively close without a riser (8.1 L, this particular case can't take full length cards though)

Using a riser is of course also what enables all the console/steambox like cases out there, like the RVZ02 or the PC-05. Both of which can take full length GPUs.

Even with the riser the RVZ02 is 12L that's only 0.6L smaller than the Ncase M1 which is disappointing because the prototype they've showed at CES 2015 was sub 10L, while the PC-05 is at a whopping 20 litres.

I never said those two cases were really small, my point was mainly that the increased usage of PCIe risers have enabled a new form factor which is generally smaller than comparable traditional cases. A form factor which maintains the ability to utilize full length GPUs

Also as an example of what is possible with this layout and the use of a PCIe riser, the original Valve Steambox is only 6.9L.

If I'm not mistaken Valve's Steambox prototype uses some proprietary parts, so a 7.25L case using only off the shelf components isn't bad at all.

Honestly, after looking at this, I think the only part that might be proprietary is the power cord.
