I just got this in today. Looks like a great switch (for the money). I especially like that the ports are on the back. Perfect for using in my house.

Ummm... that's not hella hot at all. Compgeeks.com has a 16 port switching hub for about $63 shipped w/o rebates. And smaller switches for way less (I'm eyeing the 8-port for $29 shipped). Two 8-ports would be just as good too, which sell for $54 shipped

Not a bad deal considering free shipping. I'd definitely go for it if it had 1000 bps uplink ports though.

It's just a switch. I've never heard anyone complain because their crap brand switch broke down
I just wanted to say that there were better deals out there that didn't involve the hassles of rebates. I know SMC is a brand people have heard of, but *shrug* personally, when it comes to switches, I don't really care who made it. I've never had a problem with any of them. And usually they use the same controller ICs as the more expensive counterparts anyway. Maybe others have had worse experiences, but when I do network stress tests I get similar speeds regardless of the brand of switch usually. But I only have a small network (4 computers).
But then again, I have an ECS mainboard and I'm sure you like your Asus.

If you check PriceWatch there are quite a few 16port switches available shipped for less than $60, without rebates.

But thanks for posting the deal anyway, as always I'm sure there are users out there who will find this to be a good deal and SMC is a good brand.

I use the K7S5A almost exclusively for K7 machines because it simply works. That LanPro (looks like LanPro) Switch on the geeks will probably work, but why would you take a gamble?

I have had plenty of network components hose out on me. The two worst brands have been Linksys and D-Link. Although most of SMC's line competes with the "value" brands, they tend to be higher quality along with Netgear. This is a solid deal for some good quality network gear. On the other hand, one of the best switches I've owned was a CompUSA-branded one I got on clearance.

I have owned this switch and it was great at the LAN parties I used it at. The best thing about this switch is that it carries a lifetime warranty. The only reason I got rid of mine was because I had a friend of mine who gave me a 24 port Bay Networks switch. All the SMC was doing was collecting dust so I sold it to one of my friends. I would take the SMC over a D-Link or a generic one any day.

How is the Bay Networks switch? I've seen a few on ebay for pretty good prices....

The switch is awesome. This is the first managed switch that I have been able to get my hands on and play with on my own time so I am still finding new stuff on it. I have not had a LAN party since I obtained it, but I am sure one will be in the not so distant future so I will be able to really break it in. As of right now it is a bit of overkill on my 4 pc network, but it is fun to play with and it was free. One thing it did not like was Windows XP hyperterminal, it would not accept any configuration changes I tried to make. Everytime I tried to establish it an IP address it called it invalid. I downloaded Tera Term and used it instead and it worked flawlessly. Now that it has an IP established I can just telnet into it from the command line. Unfortunately I still get less than happy looks from my wife when she gets on her pc since the dual cooling fans on the switch are louder than her pc.
