It's sort of like those Commandos games or even Fallout 1 or 2 but in real time instead of turn based. It's set during 1883 in the Old West.

Saw preview of it somewhere and thought it looked interesting (I like Old West stuff and Western movies). I saw it was on steam yesterday for $15 so I decided to buy it. Pretty cool so far. Kind of difficult though (playing on normal).

So far you control up to 3 character and they each have their own weapons and special abilities.

Yes I've read about this one, been wanting to buy this myself. I think it's a lot like the Desperado series of games which is a real favorite of mine.

As the OP said, it's on sale via Steam for $15 which also has links to the website. Couldn't find any reviews on line but took the plunge since the price was decent. It is a continuation of the Desperados series (same characters even). If you liked those, you will feel right at home.

so far i find myself only using certain characters. I've only finished the tutorial and 1st mission but it seems like I'm only using the Indian (silent bow and arrows) and the mexican (throws rocks). The other guy has a gun and explosives. not really great for stealthy attacks. one thing i find odd is that the enemies have a cone of vision. you can be standing practically right next to them and as long as you are out of the cone, they don't know you're there.

I'm also a bit disappointed that if one character dies, the mission is over. i guess this is because of story purposes but it kind of sucks.

I'm a bit stuck on the 2nd mission and not sure how to figure it out yet.

I'm going to get this then as I liked the gameplay in Desperados. Yes, no reviews yet out for this one.

Very similar to Desperados. The enemies used to have a cone of vision divided into light and dark green areas. They couldn't see you if you were crawling inside the light green cone area. Is there a knife for stealth kills in this game?

some of the characters have a melee weapon and some don't, but everyone can knock out an enemy by punching him. you can then tie the enemy up (usually only 1 character of the group can do this). You can also then move the body to hide it (again, usually only 1 character int the group can do this).

John Cooper does have a knife that he can use to stab people or he can throw it.
Hawkeye (the Indian) has a tomahawk that he can use as melee, but can't throw it.

oh, another cool thing you can do is combine abilities. for instance, if you have sam and hawkeye in your party, sam will give hawkeye a stick of dynomite and hawkeye will put it on one of his arrows so you can shoot a dynomite arrow for further range.

Yup Cooper and his nifty knife worked very well in Desperados. There was a girl in there also in the team. She could distract enemies by showing off her garters, while you could have Cooper stealthily go for the kills.

Kate is the girl. she can seduce enemies by playing with her garters. She has a makeup compact that has sleeping powder in it. she can also pretend to feint to distract enemies.

Ahh...Kate, forgot her name. How far are you into the game? I plan to get it in a day or two, still finishing CoD 4 (thanks to the 40+ centigrade outside I'll be staying indoors and playing games all weekend!).

Oh yes, found a small user review on Gamespot here.

I'm on the 2nd mission and I can't quite figure out where I need to go. I have to get the engineer drunk on tequila and kidnap him without the guards seeing me do it, but there are guards EVERYWHERE.

Damn, that sounds like a tough one! I just read at gamefaqs that apparently you can activate a 'seduction mode (F3)' for Kate where she can freely walk around the entire map without anyone attacking her. Will that help?

I don't have kate in my party. I only have the mexican and Sam. I can walk freely around the town anyway. I did figure it out though but now i'm on an even harder mission after that. I have to get my weapons out of the saloon and blow up a water tower without being seen. all i can do is punch attacks, throw 1 rock, and lay 4 tequilas down, which will put any guard that drinks it in a coma (looooooong sleep).

This game definitely makes you think about strategy.

I got a bit further now. I figured out some things that I didn't realize before, which adds a whole new aspect to the game.

Now I'm almost at the water tower but there are 5 guards looking in all directions.

This game is great! lots of trial and error but it's fun. There was a guy in a tower so I snuck through the fields behind him, threw a rock and knocked him out. Taking very good use of the view cones, I was able to throw a rock at one guy while another wasn't looking in that direction. there was a small slice of area where no view cones hit so i moved there and then threw a rock at the guy with the moving view cone to knock him out. then i had 2 guys left who were facing each other so their view cones didn't extend to their sides. walked up beside them and bum rushed them!

I also just found out that the rock can knock out more than 1 guy a time. There were 3 guys standing in a row and i was planning to throw the rock at the closest guy and then bum rush the rest but the rock knocked out all 3 guys at once!

As an interim solution just get fallout 3. It looks like the old west kinda and you can duel lucas simms at dawn with a .32 pistol, just like the old west. If you win you can take his hat and clothes then play sherrif!

While I like the idea of an Old West style game in a huge area you can explore/do stuff in, I do not want Bethesda to make an Old West mod for Oblivion. Oblivion sucked, and Fallout 3 was just a mod for Oblivion.

just no. no, no, no, no, no, no.

This post, combined with the $15 price tag, made me run right over to Steam and start downloading. Been looking for a different type of game, hopefully this fits the bill.

Awesome! The viewing cones are real savers sometimes. Can't wait to get this game!

i don't know that i've used my guns since the tutorial. it's all been melee or special attacks. there just seems to be too many enemies around that using a firearm would just bring every enemy to me. It's kind of disappointing because to me, the Old West is all about the guns and gunfights. for some missions, you can't kill the enemies, which makes it even harder.

I have done a few things though that I'm not sure was how it was supposed to happen. for instance, i had to get all 3 of my characters on a train but 1 was separated by the other 2 by tons of guards. i got 2 on the train and the last guy was blocked by a guard i couldn't figure out how to take out and there was no other way i could find to get past him, so i just made my character run past him and get on the train.

I forgot to say that you can go into 3rd person mode as well, but I haven't used it much. Maybe once or twice since the tutorial.

I have to reiterate that I think the game is difficult and makes you think and sometimes I get frustrated with trying to figure it out. But once you do figure it out, it makes you feel pretty damn good!

Also as I said before, I'm doing a lot of trial and error (thanks for quick save and load!!). there are several time where I'll be surprised at what I can do. after saying this, I guess I should experiment with the guns and see how much it does actually alert the enemies.

Yeah, I realize the trial and error prospective sometimes does get a little frustrating, same thing happened to me when I played the Commandos series or Jagged Alliance 2. When you finally figure out the right way out of a difficult situation it just brings a great sense of satisfaction. Afaik, the guns in Desperados were loud and I guess they could draw enemy forces attention. I think the surroundings also had an impact on the sound (echo). Somehow I always feel more comfortable with the stealth based gameplay, maybe it's just the hangover of playing too much Splinter Cell titles.

There was a nice game I played pretty long ago (I still have the game), it's called Outlaws (1997). It's an FPS title set in the west. The graphics look very dated now but it was simple and fun to play through. Have you played it?

Nope, don't think I've ever heard of it. I never played the Desperadoes games either.

Hi pontifex,

Still Stuck ?? in Helldorado. It's a great game and a good sequel too. The only thing is that the game is too short compared to the other ones Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive & Desperado's: Coopers Revenge.

I've completed the whole game think you will also be by this time if not give me a buzz will help you out.
