Just picked this up last night,

So far I am loving it. I didn't get the chance to play the beta or the demo, I am pretty impressed with the retail version so far though. Leveled an Evoker up to level 10, really like the spell effects and grahics. Not sure why everyone is saying they are so bad. Running everything on Very high and it looks great.

So far i like it, it has captured my attention better than any game released in the last year...my only complaint is lack of bag space....

Heh, yeah, that's where they get you with a subsciption.

I have no problem with bag space now though as I just break down all of my loot to upgrade my gear. Once you break down the gear into it's components, it barely takes any space.

GuildWars gives 4 char slots & limited stash too on their free accounts.. yet no one bashes GuildWars for it & praises them for giving new skills/items on their $30-50 paid expasions every 3 to 6 months (GuildWars is a great game..but it's not real-time 3D action

That's the main draw for me.. the 3D action like Halo once u reach the 3rd city/hub

Anyways, who cares..if u don't like a game or it's model.. just don't buy it.. why waste time trying to convince others not to buy it when u never even played retail/updated beta of last 2 weeks? As for those who love it, keep spreading the good word of mouth so more games of this type 3D action gets made instead of boring static RPGs like WoW & Everquest or Lord of the Rings THAT U HAVE TO PAY $14.95 PER MONTH FOR AFTER PAYING $40-50 FOR THE INITIAL GAME WITH NO OPTION FOR A FREE ACCOUNT

Go rag in their threads instead.. seems backward to me to critique optional subscritopins on a game that offers free accounts while doing jack shit on MMORPGs like WoW, Everquest, Lord of the Rings, StarWars, Asheron's Call, & tons of other games that charge $14.95 with NO optional free accounts.. go whine to them instead

Well excuse me.....the OP asked for our impressions so that is what I gave him.

I'll throw in my 2 cents here:

I got my hands on a copy of the retail package yesterday and spent a few hours with it. I played a Summoner in the beta (I'm a sucker for pets!) and had a pretty good time with it. But for the retail, I decided to start a new class that I had not touched in the beta but was interested in--The Marksmen.

I wanted to play through the game in a first person perspective (since that's my favorite genre) and also wanted to check out the skill tree this class had to offer.

First, I want to add that I think the skill tree in HG, in a post Titan Quest era, is a little bit of a let down. I really liked where TQ went with their hybrid class/skill system and found it really interesting. It was actually kind of a refreshing spin on how a skill trees can work. So, going in to HG and seeing that the skill trees have not changed much from D2; if at all, was a little disappointing. I figured by the time retail hit that there would be some kind of modification made there--but there wasnt. But, it does work as well as it should and it is fun crawling up the skill tree.

So, anyway, back to the game.

When I first started I went right in to the SP game (we didnt have access to this in the beta) it ran like crap on my new system (http://playedpodcast.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1193763754) that runs Crysis really well. So, I was kind of shocked. But, I decided to log into the MP and check for patches and lo and behold--there were a lot.

Once everything was done DL and installing, I kicked the game off and there was deffinitly a performance improvement made as well as gameplay additions. My system specs are:
- ASUS P5K
- Q6600 OC @ 3Ghz/per core
- 2GB DDR2 800
- EVGA 8800GT 512MB

Game settings are:
- 1680x1050
- AA x2
- DX10
- All settings maxed except for AA x 2, no ansio, and shadows on medium.

The game looks good so far, but not amazing. Granted this is coming off of spending hours playing Crysis and MoH:Airborn (surprisingly, looks amazing on new hardware) the day before. Still, looking forward to seeing the later levels and art direction.

This game is really all about the loot. Loot, loot, loot! Tons and tons of it. Some of the first bosses you kill will drop (what seems like) a ton of stuff and it will have your internal dialog screaming, "OMFG I have to get all that colorful crap quick! I need I need!". I'm into it. I like this part about the game and playing SP on the MP servers is great because you get to see other people walking around with their cool stuff on.

I really do like the randomness of the levels. It does help break things up and keeps you guessing whats around the corner (although despite this, some levels do look strangely familiar).

I did have several server disconnects last night (I imagine if I played the SP game this wouldnt have been an issue), making me restart whatever level/dungeon all over again. It was a little bit frustrating but the randomness of the level generation did ease the pain and to be honest, I was kind of expecting some crashes at launch.

Overall, the game does have its technical issues but I think the potentiol is there. If you're into the whole loot thing, this game is for you. Give it a few months if you wish. I think in 3-4 months the game will be pretty solid.

No, actually he asked for a comparison of the Retail game vs the Beta game if you played both. You never actually said you played the Retail game and that is why your whining was called out.

Well they updated the beta when retail was released and you can still play it for a couple days. I gave my impression.

I just started Titan Quest, but after reading a bunch of stuff on various sites I think I will start this game instead. It sounds great!

I have one question for you guys. After reading about the classes I think I want to start with a Marksman, but I would really enjoy the use of swords too. I read that Marksmans can use swords after some training, but how good are they with them? I don't expect them to be as proficient with swords as Templars but it would be disappointing if using them as a secondary is pointless.

sorry if I came off as insulting..didn't mean to (that response was meant for lupi & jscmuck2).. your impression of beta is valid as any other opinion if u explored past the 3rd cityhub. if I played only the demo or only the 1st city/level 5 char, I would say Hellgate SUCKS! but I explored to past 13 levels & was really impressed in beta.. got retail & it's even better (devs have said beta was 1 month behind retail build)

BTW, u have to run it with anisopteric /trilinear filtering turned on in drivers or in-game or else textures don'[t look good imo..Graphics should be on par w/Halo3 or FEAR.. should definitely be better than Medal of Honor (but other player models are bugged w/ low res textures.. hi -res textures only enabled for your char & NPCs) w/ max settings & tri/anis filtering (shadows on medium)

What translucent character? Turn off transparency antialiasing in drivers or else your char will be transparent/invisible

The beta played oddly for me - the graphics looked horrible on any settings (almost like Deus Ex). The gameplay also just felt really...flat. I know it was the same Diablo II thing of enter areas, kill monsters, kill boss, take loot. But somehow it just felt too pre-conceived. It reminded me of Anarchy Online in that respect. I also hated how short the range was on the weapons - missiles travel 10 feet, sniper bullets go 20 or 30.

Wow the Diablo fanboys really want people to LOVE Hellgate: London. I wrote a lukewarm review on Gamespot, and had my review reported for abuse AND got my inbox flamed.

I am on the edge about picking up this game or Tabula Rasa.

How do you think my system would fare with Hellgate? If sucky then I have to either pick up a AGP 1950Pro or upgrade everything to pci-e and an 8800GT.

I'd rather play the craptastic Hellgate demo than Tabula Rasa.

I was looking at upgrading for this game since I get a little bit of lag on my old hardware (9800 pro) on medium settings, but I talked to my friend who has an X800 (It's last gen, but not low end yet) and he has the same problems on low settings. Canceled my order for a 1950 pro and am going to wait it out and deal with the minor lag I get.

2 completely different games IMHO.

If you loved Hellgate demo, then you'll probably be in love with the full version. I personally wasn't too impressed with the demo. Maybe there is more to the full version...

Tabula Rasa is another MMO in the long list of MMO's. I like the game simply because it's not another frikken fantasy based MMO. It does have a storyline IF you take the time to actually read the quests and talk to the npc's.

Seems the first patch is now available, the d/l option pops up when you start the launcher. No word on any improvements, still patching mine
Oh and since this thread is about 1st impressions
So far so good, I have 3 diff chars at lvl 10 and it's quite fun-they all bring a different method to the killing-I'd say if you like the, "kill 'em all, find cool gear, lather, rinse, repeat " gameplay you will like this.

I played beta in Tabula Rasa til the last day... it is a GOOD rpg by Richard Garriouit.. the quests there are better & deeper than Hellgate, Tabula's world is huger & more NPCs to interact with as well as an actual world like WoW instead of instances.. the graphics arent as good as Hellgate & the combat is not action-oritented (it's more similar to GuildWars or WoW or ASheron's Call) --ther'es no dodging or runnig around in Tabula Rasa --there's no circle strafing, using environments for cover like in Quake/Halo (the cover system in Tabula Rasa is more like a tactical strategy game.. press a button to kneel & be behind a tree to get a reduction in damage in the static combat-Everquest-WoW tradition of just stand there & click auto-attack --it's not an action RPG at all (jumpng, dodging as has NO effect on if u get hit or not -- no evasion /reflex skill needed

However, "Tabula Rasa charges $14.95 per month on top of their $49 fee (just like WoW/Everquest,Lord of the Rings).. if it had a free option, I would pick it up just for a change of pace when I don't want the FPS action of Hellgate --Tabula's quests are deep & fun like escort/rescue missions, etc.. if Hellgate didn't offer a free subscription0-free play, I dooubt I would have picked it up either

As for why I post now, the only topics I've been passionate enough to post on is science (Dept of Energy has now invented 40% efficiency solar cells.. double the current best cells in use! this is a huge breakthrough --and that MIT has pioneered making ethanol that produces 10,000 to 20,000 more ethanol using algae than corn per acre --and how Brazil moved their entire fuel economy to ethanol because sugar cane prouces 3x more ethanol than corn (yet US politicians put tariffs on sugar cane while subsidizing unhealthy corn(it's a low-quality food low in protien, vitamins & minerals -it's just a cheap, fastgrowing source of calories & sugar for US agribusiness).

, evolution (creationist retards who are ignorant in biology & history), politics(warning: SKIP this post & do not read unless u want political discussion)

(did u know that Bush & Repub party voted against bill that would allow u to import cheaper prescription drugs(as much as 70% off) from Western Europe/Canada/Asia while encouraging off-shoring jobs(via tax-deductions) -to them, free trade means u can export jobs but u can't import cheaper drugs (Canada/Europe & Japan have even stricter drug safety regulations than the US)

did u know that Ralph Nader's plan of removinng ALL income taxes for the first $100,000 income--that's right, the first $100,00 in income is tax-free ---it's to be replaced by a 1 penny or 1% sales tax on stock/commodoties/deriviatives trading in the stockmarket (because there's TRILLIONS of trades every day.. calculations show it's enough to replace most of the income tax --but all stock sales are tax-free currently.. and the rightwingers like retard Bush or moron Mitt Romney want to remove the 15% capital gains tax --funny how they want to keep gambling/speculation of daytraders/stockbrokering income tax-free while taxing the productive/service members of society --a 1% or 1 penny tax would encourage long-term investment/holding, promote stability & decrease speculation/gambling in the stockmarket (because when u buy stock, it goes to the private seller, not the corp unless it's an initial public offering--just like being a used car,no money goes to Ford but instead to the used car dealership --current backward system encourages bubbles & speculation (wow, $90/barrel of oil in the commodities market when just a few years ago it was $30/barrel.. supply did not go down 3x nor did demand go up 3x --it's just speculative bidding up of prices --oh ya, did u know that the Repub-controlled Congress removed the law(instated after the 1929 stockmarket crash/Great Depression) that prevented banks from gambling in the stockmarket if they wanted to be FDIC insured ..

now, thanks to repub party, u have the current meltdown of FDIC insured banks buying derivatives & junk loans --just like the same politicans removed the law that prevented savings & loans from investing in junk bonds in the 1980s --history repeats itself because 'deregulation' forgets that human nature is to remove safety laws to prevent conflicts of interest in the quest for greed --hence, why oligopolices/cartels, etc exist --the foxes are watching the henhouse ) --oh ya, I'm passionate about Hellgate too because it's th only PC game to hold my attention since Asheron's Call & Fallout2/Oblivion --and I didn't even like Diablo2 nor Warcraft
