I'm not really sure who owns this particular connection, but what should I do so that whoever it is takes the proper measures to lock it down? I am looking at his router's config screen right now.

i think your choices are:

1. start asking random neighbors if they have wifi until you find the person and tell them they should lock down their connection (or volunteer to do it for them, though you will become their computer fix-it guy)
2. do nothing but discontinue using their connection
3. do nothing but continue using their connection

sniff the traffic until you find their email address. lock the router down and email them the information.

its the same as, if the car is unlocked and the key's in it, do you take it for a drive or worse, keep it?

but you can defend it as "my laptop sees the neighbor signal as the stronger signal, and ergo, connected to the best possible connection automatically" if you do get caught, you can't really use this if you stole a car "this car's proximity to me was less than my own car, and ergo I take it for a ride since the key is inside"

Can you even change most wireless routers' settings wirelessly? Anyway, option 2 = win. And when your ISP ditches you for downloading all that goat porn - you have an emergency connection to fall back on.

how would they retrieve the email?

By locking it down but allowing it for their IP addresses if they are currently connected to the router.

Doesn't apply, as a car is a tangible, non-shared item. Two people can use a wireless connection at once. It is very difficult for two people to drive the same car at once, to different locations.

yes, once you are connected to it you go in IE and do 192.168.1.1 or whatever for the set model, and then you login. If the thing isnt locked down, the un/pw is either admin admin or admin password probably

BTW: I am NOT advocating doing this, its more than likely illegal.

once you get the config screen, look at the connected devices. find the ip of one of them, then use the 'netsend' command from the command prompt to message them

If people have enough knowledge to actually buy and hook up a wireless router and not bother to set up the security then oh well, their problem. It shows clear and simple how to do it in the manual.

I have never connected to someone else myself but I just dont understand why people want to try so hard to make the owners aware.

I already checked that and he wasn't on. I'm just going to leave it alone. Maybe someday Qwest will go down and his connection (Comcast) will be available
