This is part 2 of the post about how Staples won't take out a password for you.

So, I took out the customers sons password which he forgot. When he got his new computer for college the old one sat in a closet since last may and he couldn't remember the password, since he changed it once a week.
I basically then tuned it up. Virus/spyware scan. Checkdisk and defrag. Windows Updates, etc. I also added 256 mb DDR333 cas 2.5 for 6 dollars(used memory) which brought it up to 768 mb (there are two memory slots. one already had a 512 mb stick in it)

Fast forward to today. My customer is a secret shopper so she took the computer into Staples for the "free tuneup". They immediately called her and said she had a "serious problem" in that she needed at least 1 gb. memory and she had only 768. (btw she has a separate video card)

And how much will it cost to replace the 256 mb stick of ram with a 512 mb stick of ddr333 cas 2.5?

50 dollars?

75 dollars?

100 dollars??

Nope. 120 bucks for a stick of ram Newegg will deliver to your door within three days for 28 bucks.

You do realize every retail store charges that much for that kind of stuff right?

Dont believe me? How much would it cost you at Best Buy?

Edit: Did that $120 include installing the RAM? If so, does the $28 Newegg order include that?

This is today's cutthroat but highly competitive marketplace. The highly informed shopper can truly make out well, but companies with thin margins can and do try to make up for this on the backs of the uninformed shopper, who can really get the shaft.

Next question is, why do they think you "need" 1GB of RAM in there? (Or rather, what reason did they give? The real reason was likely, "We want at least $120 from you.")

I'll guarantee they recommend that for minimal systems for program performance... its usually the cheapest thing you can do to improve system performance, when the customer is complaining about slow systems and program loading... don't forget, the op stated they took it in for a "system tuneup" .. which means they said stuff loaded slow, sluggish.

I work at Officemax and we do the same thing to customers.

Also true. I forgot to point out in my first reply that I worked at OfficeMax for 2+ years, then at Staples. Pretty much standard operating procedure at both

Have to ask Heller how it is at Office Depot

"Install"? You basically just plug it in. It's harder to "install" a USB printer because they usually need some kind of driver where as RAM just works. If installing the RAM is $120, installing a printer should be at least $250.

Suggest.....you...need....to.....read.....post.....before......replying.

btw if the ram retails for 59.00 at Staples and Staples charges 70.00 and hour labor.....then they are saying it takes almost and hour to put in a stick of memory?

Most "average" people I know do not care to learn how to do it. Yes, you and I know its not difficult at all but a large majority of people would pay to have this done...

My bad. Here's the ram on the Staples website:
http://www.staples.com/PNY-512MB-PC3...product_574202

It's a little less than 60.00 its 52.99. Hmm. So its over 60.00 to put in a stick of memory?

According to their website it should have been $40.

Either way, dont take this as me defending Staples. I totally hate that place and their practices; just pointing out that they have reasons for doing things this way
