I like both cards but the problem is that i will play in 1080p. I know that for $100 the 290 offers a lot more performance and is a newer card and there is a chance it can be unlocked to 290x. The 290 is overkill for 1080p?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Next Rig
CM Stryker
Maximus VI hero
4670k 4.4ghz or 4.5ghz if possible with CM Glacer 240mm
280x or 290
Viewsonic 23" IPS monitor 1080p.
XFX Black Edition 750w Gold
Samsung Evo 256gb
WD Blue 1TB
GSkill Trident X 2400mhz 10-12-12-31

I was looking at the Cooler Master V700w but is $10 more. Corsair ax760 series to much for me.
I like the Haf XB Evo but i prefer the look of the Stryker.
Not a fan of FPS or a hardcore FPS but i play every type of game. Prefer games like Bioshock, Skyrim with a lot of mods.
I like the red mod maybe i will do it or not to the 280x or the 290.
Maybe will get the Samsung Evo 120gb i don't play a lot of games at the same time.

I don't think the 290 is overkill for 1080P if you want to keep the card for a while and regardless of settings keep a good framerate. I'd wait for a 290 with a custom cooler instead of the reference board but would get a 290 for the long term performance.

That's just me though and don't really like framerate dips.

if you have the cpu to fully utilized a 290 then its not really overkill at 1080 for the really demanding games if you like cranking all the settings.

you really should list all your current specs in detail including exact power supply when starting a thread like this.

Too bad you didn't post yesterday. Newegg had a 7970 for $220 after rebate. I would have recommended that. At $100 price difference I would go with the r9 290 or wait for another deal on a 7970.

I'm an NVidia nut but I'd go with the 7970. The price for this card are f**king low for such a powerful GPU. Grab 2 and it'll smash any game out there. If my mobo supported XFire this is the route I'd take.

Why wouldn't your motherboard support crossfire? As far as I know every motherboard that supports sli supports crossfire except nvidia chipsets and their out of the motherboard business.

I would not build a gaming pc for using high end gpus with only 4 cores at this point. having more than 4 cores will help in some multi player games and even in Crysis 3 single player you cannot stay above 60 fps in some spots with only 4 cores. and a 1tb hd is not going to go far unless you like deleting a lot of stuff. with some games being 25-30 GB or more now that drive will be used up quick. I just bought a 2 GB drive last week because I was sick of deleting stuff every week.

Should pickup a cheap 7970 to be honest, there was a Sapphire Vapor-X available yesterday for $220 with rebate and I am sure you can find something similar around Black Friday since the cards are discontinued and they will likely be liquidated. Use the savings for a 2nd monitor
