Yep, not only has my dad finally decided to get off Mac after waiting so long to upgrade his OS 8, but I've convinced him to let me build him an AMD system!

He was originally interested in Intel (hype, timidness and lack of research on his part) but with a general budget of 1000 US dollars I was sure to let him know where the best performance for your dollar goes these days.

-He's got to have it sooner rather then later. I tried to tell him about nforce, that would be goood for him, but he just won't wait. He has work he needs to get done and wants it no later then the end of this month.

-He'll be primarily using Photoshop, Quark Express and messing with imaging in other ways. Lot's of scanning too. Not directly related to his job.

-The key here is bang for the buck, but also reliability. I can't have crap breaking down on him, I would like to avoid generic but I also do not need the speediest around. This is pretty much a value system.

-Nothing is going to be overclocked. One less thing I have to worry about when he starts playing with it.

Well now tell me what you think:

CPU- AMD 1 Ghz T-Bird. So cheap. Let's give him some decent power here. ~100

Mobo- Here is where I need the most help, I don't know jack about Athlon mobos. VIA's KT266 chipest mobo? AMD 760 chipset mobo? Gotta have 266 mhz FSB for my 2100 DDR SDRAM. I would like reliablity over blazningly fast speed here- need a good solid board. ~150

RAM- 2 X 256MB Crucial CL 2.5 PC2100 DDR. Giving him quality here. He could get away with 256 but just like the refusal to wait for nforce this is something he insists on. I'll be giving him Win2k so at least it well be used well if ever needed. Plus ram is so cheap. Why not. 2.5 CAS latency will be fine and ECC is not needed. Free shipping from crucial.com = ~83

Graphics Card- Never shoped for a value graphics card before, believe it or not. He won't be playing any games and 2D image quality is key. Still planning to use AGP slot. This is the other thing I'm really not sure about. I'd love to get some good matrox 2d quality in there but I'm not so sure I should pay that much. GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB has poor 2D quality? Do I really need good T&L? What about Radeon's solutions or the Kyro II? ~100

HD: Best not to skimp here in quality, especially since he really is not going to need anything larger then 20Gigs. Looking for something EIDE @ 7200 rpm but ATA/66 should do just fine, but it all actuality it might be easier to find him an ATA/100. For a drive this small I can probably get both good speed and reliability for a cheap price, any suggestions? ~100

Soundcard- I think I'm going to just slap in a Live! value. I was originally going to go with some onboard sound for free but after I told him decent sound would cost him no more than 50 clams he said put it in. He won't be playing music but he might watch an avi or mpeg from time to time I could probably go cheaper here but for now ~50

CD-RW- He's dumping his old 4X CD-R. This is also gonna be his CD-ROM drive so I'd like to treat him to something that can take care of business. It doesn't have to be the abolute latest and fastest, just something with proven reliable and good performance. Plextor comes to mind right now... ~150

NIC- Linksys EtherFast 10/100, let's move on. ~20

Case- Mid tower will be good. Need good Athlon-approved Power Supply and also one that will be good running his 1Ghz and of course everything else in the case. I would like a little extra wattage for this system just incase. Suggestions? I don't see the need to go over 150 here in price... ~150

OS- Win2k Pro. ~250

~1153

This is running a little high right now but I'm sure I can bring it down some more.

Everything else is covered. Please help me in those undecided areas, comment on parts I currently have in and of course shout out any conflicts. Hopefully I give him good first taste of IBM PC

Are you getting the retail 1GHz? If not you will also need a HSF for that. Another ~20-25 bucks.

For the mobo, I have the Epox 8K7A and I would recommend it highly. ~120 @newegg.com

I would also suggest the Enlight 7237 case also from newegg, ~50 I believe and that should work great for that.

I have also heard that for 2D quality the ATI is better than the Geforce family, but I personally think my GF2 has great 2D quality.

How about a 1.2 Athlon for $100 ?

Since this is for your Dad (I'm a Dad,too), why not get a motherboard with onboard CMedia or Creative soundchip? That would cut cost and they both offer very good sound. (Not the same as the VIA AC '97 sound via software).

ATI Rage Pro or Radeon VIVO or All-in-One. Good 2d/3d speed (not the fastest, but very good). Also, can capture video from a camcorder with these.

Don't rule out the Ali chipset. Slightly slower in some benchmarks, but who would notice in real use? (I have the KA266. Working great after stumbling through setup. refurb for $89 with free shipping from NewEgg.)

You can get a good case for a lot less than $100!

CDRW for under $100.

Just my .2 cent.

IoMega CDRW $87 shipped

Photoshop, Quark Express

Does your Dad already have software for the PC? That's going to be expensive if he's only got it in mac format.

Your system looks good though. I'd go with an EPOX board.

From what I have seen around SB Live is having trouble with VIA chipsets I believe. Or it is a win2k problem. I Would personally recommend AMD chipset over VIA anyways.

1) Does he want/need a monitor?
2) I'd say skimp on the case, it really is the least important of all computer parts.
3) Since you are over-budget, I bet your dad couldn't tell the difference between onboard sound and a $50 card.

Edit: I forgot 4) Speakers?

Does he need keyboard or mouse? Does that price include shipping?

Ok this will get me flamed: I configured what you listed at Dell and got a 1.1 GHz P3 for $1299 shipped? But if you get your memory elsewhere that becomes $1099 shipped. If you want to go that route he gets free customer service as well.

Okay sorry for the delay, I was taking lunch.

I'd feel more comfortable getting a retail 1 gig T-Bird. I forgot to consider the difference. OEMs are running in the $70s right now on pricewatch so the retails should still be around 100 I take it. Although I'm not sure which extras would really be of good use if I bought the retail?

1.2 Ghz for 100, I assume that is OEM? I don't think I am going to need to give him more then a Ghz.

If my dad can't get his software for the PC through the academic institution he works for then I can hook him up.

Doesn't need monitor, speakers, keyboard, or mouse (I have those for him already).

I'm don't want to order an entire system from anywhere. First, the prices on the things I listed here can get lower, they weren't the lowest on Pricewatch or anything, but they weren't the highest either. This will also be the first system I am building and I want to get my feet wet without having to worry about fux0ring up the latest and greatest parts so this is a good opportunity for me I think.

By the sounds of things I will for now get a cheaper case (that still with decent power supply) and will strongly consider ditching the Live for more stable but definitely cheaper sound. People seem to like Epox, anandtech recommends it as well, but I will go look into chipsets for it as well as for others. I'll look into a cheaper burner from a name brand and I might search for a slower Plextor then something in the 150 range.

I still have a day or two to finalize this, I'll keep getting back to you guys.

Thanks for the help.

Problem with SB Live! and the KT133A chipset based mobos.
Yeah AMD chipset is better than VIAs.

Good luck!

sounds pretty good here's what i suggest:

buy oem 1ghz, i got one for 83 bucks at allstarcomponents.com but they're service was terrible and shipping took 10 days+

shuttle ak31 rev2 for motherboard, its really stable 6pci/1agp/1 useless software card port amr/cnr? 4 dimms, but there's issues with running all 4 of them full with double sided ram www.mwave.com

no 3d graphics? just photoshop? buy matrox the king of 2d, g400s are cheap, alternativly twinview geforce mx's go for 104 at cdrexpress

40 gb hd's for 109.95 shipped at starcomputers.com ata100 also

good choice on ram

if he's really not interested in sound, get him a live value or live mp3+ for 10 bucks at staples after rebates- check out hot deals for rock bottom prices

case - i got an antec 1030B -black case, huge, rounded edges, beautiful, 102 shipped from microbarn.com, more than he'll probably need

cdrw, the hp combo cd/dvd/cdr/rw drives are going for 60 bucks in hotdeals forum i think 32/10/12/8 i think

linksys nics have a 10 dollar rebate, staples has them for 19.97 so 10.97 after rebate (buck tax)

the system i put together had everything above minus the cd drive for $880, 1.4ghz tbird/512ddr mushkin basic ram/40gb hd/ak31rev2/oem live 5.1 w/old livedrive/50x afreey/floppy/linksys nic/evga twinview geforcemx/antec case

as for cooling; i suggest a globalwin wbk68, very quiet fan- only part i got locally for 26~ bucks, also get a cpu spacer so you don't crush the chip when you put on the heatsink for 9 bucks, check out 2cooltek.com - good prices, good store, fast shipping

i assume he's got a monitor? i got a samsung 17in from staples for 123.57

Go with the Athlon MP if your dad i going to be doing a lot of graphic work. The MP's contain the full set of 71 SSE instructions that program makers like Adobe make use of in their programs. It's worth the extra money

Since stability is a key factor here, and DDR is relatively new, I think that maybe a board with a KT133A chipset will do (MSI, Abit, and Asus are good brands) . The difference is about 5% compared to a Via KT266 or an Acer Lab's Magik 1. Then, you can equip that with some CAS2 PC133 ram (crucial, maybe?) If cost is a big deal, I think that getting a Geforce 2 MX won't be a bad idea ($70, maybe. MX400's cost too much and they don't perform any better).
