Help a noob out.

Got a baby boy due this week. Wife wants to purchase a camcorder, no you sick-ohs, not to record the birth, anyway....need some help.

Hoping to keep it below $500.
Believe I want the minidv recording media.
I don't need anything fancy.
Would like to be able to hook it up to my pc to edit.
Would most likely order through Newegg or Bestbuy.

Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.
