Yeah, don't listen to what any of us say. None of us are doctors who have met the person.

With that said, I'll throw in my two cents (as a lowly psych major). She may be manic, but true mania (or even hypomania) is something that lasts for a while--the DSM IV says a manic episode has to last 2 weeks to count for bipolar I. It entails MORE than just being violent. Does she spend money too freely, have delusions of grandeur, hardly sleep at all? She sounds like she has psychotic symptoms. She's being violent or crazy. Also, if she was bipolar she would have a depressive state, too. Having only mania is very, very rare.

She does need to see a psychiatrist. Only they can diagnose her.

Yes she spends money freely(stole money from her mom $8,000 and hided somewhere), does not sleep very well, delusions most of the time, talks to herself, consider herself being normal and refuse to see any psychiartrist(she actsnormal infront of a psychiartrist), refuse to take any medicine given by doctors, believe her parents weren't her real parents, and listens to no one (have a world of her own). I have been listening to my friends story and I can't help but to feel sorry for him.

you know... you friend's sister HAVE to see psychiatrist/psychologist, and she has to take medicines and has to be counselled by professional.

If she refuses to go and refuses to take medicines, maybe your friend should go to see the psychiatrist(s) first, tell them all the situations, and ask them what can he do in order to bring her seeing psychiatrist. I think they'll teach your friend.

If your friend's sister is going crazy, i think your friend should call the police.
If possible, try to videotape her when she's going crazy and abusing someone else, so, have evident.

Sorry to hear about that.

Well, one can also have mania with psychotic symptoms. It is odd that she 'acts normal' around a psychiatrist. Usually one cannot control their mania, because they are so into 'their own world'. Also, if she's just borderline psychotic, she might just be 'being a bitch'. If she refuses to at least see a doctor to try to get her act together, her parents should lay down an ultimatum.

the hard part is that we live out of state from his parents. else we'll just run over and hold his sister down while the cops get there.

If she is not willing to help herself there is nothing else anyone can do.

If they can establish a behavior background and get a court order, people can be forced to take their medications. They will need to be placed on conservatorship, and most likely addmitted to a pshyciatric facility( i used to work at a locked psych facility). The county has conservators, or a family member can be one also, all it is is someone who is there to look out for the best intrests of the person and has the legal authority to force medication on someone.

edit: One thing you can do is when she is acting up, call the police and have them do a 5150 on her which gives them 72 hours to evaluate. It seems as if the medical professionals are not being very helpful though, so I dont know if this would help. Just make sure you keep calling the cops when she is acting up, They will get fed up and kind of force the issue with the doctors.

Sometimes having law enforcement step in is the only option, and it's frequently ignored even though it's the BEST thing to do in many cases...

Oh no.. that's not good....
Will you two go back later soon!?
Or can you ask for some advices from psychiatrist at your place first, and then you let your friend's parents know what they can do, or what you & your friend can do!?

Isn't it just nice dealing with mental health issues? I have a relative with a serious diagnosis mental health condition and who is complaint with their treatment plan and they still have issues with getting proper treatment at times. It seems there are just to few pysche treatment beds in hospitals.

What I have learned, from the grapevine is this. When the are acting up the best bet to get quick treatment is to take them to the local pysche hospital and tell the admitting person they are suicidal. Wait with the mentally ill person until they are called for their interview with the evaluator, excuse yourself to go to the bathroom and leave. In this state they will be forced to hold the person for at least 72 hours and do an evaluation. Essentially just dump them there. I've heard of numerous instances where the mentally ill person will appear marginal but since there is a family menber with them - they are just released due to the bed shortage, with vague promises of out-patient treatment.
