Help! Abit KT7/Duron frequently hang+network problem

Abit KT7, Duron 650@650, 96M PC100 generic RAM, IBM 75GXP 30G (IDE-1), ATI Xpert98 AGP, Yamaha ISA sound, Linksys NIC (@PCI3), 56k modem (@PCI5), 250W case, CD-ROM (IDE-2). Win98SE, Hotpoint370 driver disabled, USB enabled for Epson printer. It is networked to my other PC: Compaq.

Problems:
1) In windows the system hangs every few minutes;
2) I cannot access Compaq by clicking Netword Neighborhood. If I use cntl+alt+del it showed explorer not responding. Sometimes after a long delay the Explorer did showed Compaq but access Compaq directory repeated the same problem.

I'm kind of having the same problem. I can see my other systems, but when I try access a random folder or file it just sits there, I can't close the window or anything. However if I wait about 1 or 2 mins I can then access the file or folder or the window will close. Does yours do this as well? I thought my NIC was taking a dump. Anyone have a answer to this?

I fixed it. I got a new network card.

I found out some more quirks about this KT7 board which might be of interest. The silly IRQ sharing (cringe) with ACPI can be a real killer. The more items on a single IRQ, the slower the system will run (I could explain the interrupt theory behind most PC's but it is soooo boring). So, how do you fix this...easy...disable external hardware you don't use. Kill the two serial ports if you can which free's up irq's 3 and 4...and the USB hubs will tend to take IRQ 3 and resolve many conflicts. If you are still using serial...hehehehehe....time to leave the stone age and buy new hardware

The real key to making the kt7 really perform well is not to share IRQ's even though it is perfectly legal...or just make sure that key items are on their own irq. for examle...vid card and sound card on same irq could cost you 20 frames per second or more...
