It is currently 108 outside of my house, and even though I set my AC to 75, it is currently 80 in my house, because the AC can't seem to cool the house good enough. Any ideas how to improve the efficiency of the AC unit to help it reach the desired temperature?

If its 108 outside, you should not be setting your AC to 75, even if its fully charged, filters are clean, and its good size for your residence. Set it to 78-82.

I live in Phoenix, and during the summer, my AC will struggle during the daytime to get it below 80. My unit is underpowered, and 10 years old, relative to the size of my house though. At night, I'll turn it down to 78 to sleep easier. During the day, 80-82.

What ton unit do you have, and what location? It's possible that the outside temp has exceeded the design temp for your setup.

OP, I have the same problem here. In my case, the AC condensor is too small and my options are limited because it's a rental.

Ended up getting a portable AC unit - works very nicely in tandem with the central AC to get the temp down to 75.
The bonus is that I can set the central AC higher (with the portable AC off) when I'm at work to save energy, since it now
doesn't take bloody ages to cool down in the evenings.

I found my major leak/s using soapy water and a flashlight, recaptured the freon, then sandpapered and cleaned the area/s and spot welded them, and refilled the unit. The HVAC guy thought it would never work, yet six years later and it's still going strong.

I think making soapy water would be where it's too much trouble and I call someone.

We have been seeing record heat waves this year, lol at those who deny global warming.

i know right! at what point is the human body not efficient anymore at maintaining 98.6..

something tells me it's not supposed to be 128.

Wow, my window unit doesn't have a built-in MP3 player, much less heated and cooled seats! Nice.

That would be unacceptable for me. It gets in the 100s here too and my a/c can and does keep my house at 68F all summer long. I honestly don't think I could be comfortable at 78F. If your a/c won't cycle at 75 during the day you need more a/c IMO.

If we got 100's here I'd seriously be looking at n+1 redundant industrial AC units. What's probably happening is the condenser coils are just too hot and can't shed enough heat so the evaporator is not getting as cold as it should. There are other possibilities too such as ones already suggested. The unit may also be undersized. If 100's are typical where you live I'd definitly look at getting another AC unit to supplement the existing one. Perhaps a couple mini splits around the house.

Heh, just snapped that as I left work yesterday evening. Texas is OK, but I really miss the freezing a*s winters of the midwest

Give me cold anyday. Hot can GTFO.

I'd just bear it, 26.666°C is okay for sleeping and heatwaves don't last that long anyway.

Or put another way, you can always put on more layers, but you can't get more naked than naked

Does your home have an attic? If so, you should have a powered fan for attic ventilation. If it's over 100 degrees outside, it's at least 150 in the attic. That heat inevitably seeps into the living space.

You might have a freon leak. About once a year, I have to have somebody come out and add a little bit of freon to my A/C. It cost about $100. They want to tear apart my house to find the leak, but I'm not to keen on that idea.

I have the same issue, was told it's in the evap coil, I only get mine recharged every 3 years. I should get a new system but that's 5K (although I would get it back eventually in electric savings). OP, check the temp of the air coming out of the unit, try and find a register closest to the air handler, it should be about 19-22 degrees cooler than the ambient house temp. Other suggestions already mentioned before (filters, ect.). 108 is really, really hot, I'm guessing AC installers in your part of the country would take that into consideration and install an appropriate sized unit.

Turn off your AC, you're killing the planet.

"Recaptured the freon"?, it's called "pumping down" a system, I doubt you have an EPA license to buy freon or the equipment necessary to do so..

Not a bad idea, they even sell solar powered one's so it won't add to the electric bill..
