help accessing files on computer

i had to reset my bios once, and after that, my windows became corrupted. since then, i have reinstalled windows as a new installation. i've saved all my previous files inside my documents on my old account and windows isn't allowing me to open them right now. is there a way to use my new windows to access the files on my old windows account?

Are you using win2k or xp on ntfs? Make sure you have right to the folder. I'm not sure the OS will wipe out folder or not. Make a folder "backup" and copy files next time when you reinstall the OS on the same disk or partition. The OS usually will wipe out the desktop folder or any other windows folder under windows directory.

yep, i am using winxp under ntfs partition. the files are still there though, everything is still under c:\documents and settings/my name... it's just that with a new installation of windows, i can't access these files as windows recognize me as a different user now. i need a way to access my old folders cause i have like 60gigs of data in it.

Try to login as administrator. Or startup in Safe Mode.

If you have admin control, just go into the C drive, then my doc and settings, then go into the user the files were saved under and you should find it there.

well, it seems i can log into every user folder except my own...i can log into admin, all user, default user, but not my own. i tried bringing my harddrive as a slave on another machine and it still doesn't work, i can go into my new user file from the new install of winxp, but i can't access that old one with everything in it.

Log in as the administrator and then take over ownership of your folder. Its a permissions issue.

Log in with administrative rights and do the following:

Right click on the FOLDER in question.
Properties
Click the Security Tab
Add your username account under Groups and Users
Highlight (click) username account
Set permissions to FULL under Permissions for <Username>


If there is NO Security Tab listed in Properties there are extra steps involved.

Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View Tab> scroll to the bottom> uncheck" Use simple file sharing (recommended)"

it seems the only folders i open and get the security tab is the user folders i created with this windows xp, the ones i've created with my previous winxp only has general, sharing, and customize.

Don't open the folders, right click on them in explorer and go down to properties.
