In both NT 4 and Windows 2000 Professional, I keep getting freezes where I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Anyone know why?

In NT, I thought it was a corrupt mouse driver which I stopped, i8042prt.sys, I think. In 2000, I thought it was a incompatible nvidia video driver. In 2000, I did download all the critical patches and Windows SP1 to no avail.

If I can't get this to work, I'm going back to my old Soyo 6BA+IV (by the way, anyone know the highest cpu speed supported with the new bios?).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bug..
Did you ever solve your problem..I have a simlar freeze on a soyo 6ba+IV with windows 2000 pro. I too have tried SP1, deinstalling logitech drivers, and reinstalling os. Machine ran fine in 98 1st edition but 2000 sends it into this freeze screen and if I ctrl-alt-del then the menu slowly tries to appear but never does, I eventually have to restart it from the box. Let me know if you have fixed or figured out your problem. Thanks

Highest the P3V4X can support is 1 gig.
Here is the link:
Here
Try keeping slot 1 open, I believe that shares with the AGP slot.
Also, try getting the lastest via 4 in 1 drivers.. i think it's 4.25a.
Where are you getting these freezes at..during the boot up...in windows?

nboblitt: no, I don't think the problem was ever fully resolved. It's still very unstable in Win2K, but not NT 4 Server. Go figure.
I was seeing similar crashes in NT 4, but once I left one dimm slot open, we don't get those freezes anymore.

DrunkenAznBoy: Thanks for the info, but on a Australian p3v4x forum, someone said that the highest is 1 ghz. Do you have another link for that asus page? The link doesn't work "can't find server".

It's not crashing when booting, but when I use anything in Win2K. We're going to try wiping out the whole hd, in case some of the other os' on it are causing problems (it's a dual boot).

Here is the Australian forum (thanks to the Anandtecher who posted it before):

nboblitt: I just put in a new stick of Crucial PC 133 CAS2 ram, and the computer seems to be much more stable than before. Although, I did get one freeze within the past hour where I had to push the reset button.

Bug: Thanks for the info, I may have solved my problem also. Funny you should mention memory because I just put in another 256 when I installed 2000, I'll have to check that out. The way I solved my problem was to have SP1(had installed that before), IE 5.01 SP1, and directx 8a installed. I also put in the newest 3dfx 3 2000 driver and have stopped playing winamp. I'm going to do a test sometime soon where I do use winamp because once I stopped that my computer stopped crashing. So I know this probably doesn't help you much but the more info we all have, the better!

nboblitt: I noticed that the only 2 times my computer in Win2K froze was when I was at Espn.com. I once went almost an hour burning a cd and surfing at the same time without a freeze until visiting that site.

Bug: I have a couple of security cameras that use a java applet to "push" graphics into the browser and when I loaded an ocx/active x component to control them I could always make my machine freeze. I haven't tried looking at them for a while. I was just happy my machine wasn't freezing during normal use lately after installing all the updates. Do you know if espn.com has anything weird(active x etc.) going on with it? I wouldn't think so but you never know.

nboblitt: yeah, I bet espn has a ton of activex, java applets, on their website. That accounts for all those annoying pop up ads. But I can't say for sure that their html code is causing my freezes, just seems to be a coincidence at times.
