Well, you're kind of limiting yourself. Out of that list, I'd probably have to go with the Yamaha. But don't forget about the Plextor 8/4/32 IDE drive. It's around $250, but you're getting the best IDE CD-RW on the market.

I personally have a Sony Spressa USB drive. Only 4x, but it's pretty nice. Haven't had many problems since I have a good Motherboard and Win98SE on that system. But the brand to buy right now is definitely Plextor. If you have a SCSI card in your system go with a Plextor SCSI caddy drive....if you get one of those, it'll last you many, many years. But you will be very happy with any plextor drive you get because they are the best right now in cd burners. Check CNet for some reviews or anyone else and you'll see what I mean. They support every major format and stand behind their products.

I think Compusa may still have the Sony CRX145E's on sale thru today for $199. Its a 10/4/32 drive, plus you get a free 10 pack of cdr's and a free 3 pack of cdrw's. I picked one up to replace an older ricoh 2x scsi. Works great. And, the sony's work great with clonecd. I would have preferred another scsi drive but for the price this seemed too good to pass up.

I have an HP and it works great. HP makes some really good CD Burners with the best bang for your buck. But a Plextor is the Cadillac of CD Burners so if you demand super high quality, get that.

As far as burning reliability goes . . . SCSI is better than IDE, and external is better than internal. You get just about what you pay for.

Sony, Yamaha, Plextor, and HP are all good in that department.

I find USB connections are still somewhat on-again/off-againish to ring my chimes. IEEE 1394 is better . . . but that is still limited in availability of hardware. Sony has one I believe, and the camcorder/video capture people speak highly of it.

Just upgraded to a S&F CD Rocket Mach 12(SCSI). Very satisfied with it so far. Too bad that the company is out of business. But for $150, who cares? Still prefer my Imation/Plexor 8x20 (2 of them actually) which I use with DiscJuggler and can copy 2 CD's for about 9 minutes.

For IDE Interface, I'd go for the latest Plextor drive 12/10/32A which supports a new technology called Burn-Proof. For about $260, it should help you from making coasters. And 10X for rewrite speed too.

smart and friendly is pretty much gone, so getting a drive would be risky (tech support and W wise).

What about the 8-4-32 from Acer with 8mb buffer, any good? I think I saw them on Pricewatch.com around the high 100's to low 200's?

Just checked at PRICEWATCH.COM and saw some for around $169 for the 8-4-32 with the 8mb buffer? This a good or bad thing?

My vote is for the Plextor 8432. Got it a few weeks ago for about $150 at buy.com after coupons.

Hmm. Using a Sony 140E OEM. Never gave me a bit of trouble. I've heard the retail Plextors are really good though.

I don't think anyone here has the Acer, as I asked the same Q a while back and everyone basically said *breathes in* PLEXTOR!

That said, I remember Acer's 2x2x6 being well-reviewed when it came out, so they've made at least one good drive. Plus, 8MB's can't hurt.

I'd still go for the Plextor. They only make CD recorders, so they must be better at it than other, multi-faceted companies.

I own the 2-2-6 acer and that why I asked, its ok but just outdated. did not know if the 8mb made that big of a diff. over 4mb like most other good ones?
SO, DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE 8-4-32 ACER WITH 8MB, IF SO IS IT GOOD OR ABOUT THE SAME AS THE 4MB BURNERS????
Thanks
