Here are the problems...

XP1600 with Win XP Home OS. I start up the computer and it allows for me to login and my desktop shows up very briefly and the computer reboots itself, it does it contineously, which doesn't allow me anytime to do any diagnostic testing.

This problem just started two days ago, I didn't down load anything didn't open any emails that had strange extensions, but I do have cable modem which is running 24/7, however, my other computer (the one I'm using right now) and laptop isn't affected by whatever it is.

Does anybody think this is some type of virus or just a computer software problem?

Any suggestions on what I need to do in order to stop computer from rebooting itself?

Thanks in advance.

First, boot in safe mode. If that works you'll have a ton more troubleshooting options open to you.

Thanks for the input Smilin.

I've tried as you've suggested. I held down F8 key to get to the safe mode, but computer is going right into the Disk Checking and then to the login page and the cycle continues as I described in the above post.

Is there other way to get to the safe mode besides holding down F8 key?

Sounds like the Blaster Virus. Do you have another computer you can scan the harddrive for viruses with?

One of my computers had this problem. I have a dual-boot system with Win XP Pro and RH 9. It would randomly restart for no apparent reason. I replaced the computer's power supply and the problem hasn't occured again yet. You should probably get your power supply looked at.

Thanks for the inputs guys, I appreciate it.

I do have another computer but its an old PIII system, with few problems with its own, but I'll give it a shot.

I was finally able to get into the Safe mod and still haven't able to locate the source of the problem.

What seems like there is something hardware/software conflict and prevents from completing start up.

It allows me to login to my desktop, but within 10 seconds, computer reboots and it will end up at the Disk Checking and it is constantly repairing lost data.

I ran an old virus scan program (bit out dated) didn't catch any virus, i suspect that is due to running outdated anti-virus program.

I had a similar problem with my Athlon 1333MHz, and it turned out to be CPU overheating. I replaced the fan, and the problems went away!

Dumb question, but did you disable the automatic reboot option when your machine crashes?

Since it sounds like you were able to get into safe mode, did you still have problems with reboots? If not, the problem may be with the software itself (since a hardware failure would still affect you in safe mode).

Jester, no i did not disable automatic reboot option. I might have to try this.

I think I compounded my problem even more now.

I have a brand new winxp pro laying around my desk, bought it 3 month ago, just never got around to upgrade.
I was talking to one of my bud what is a network manager and he suggested that I install the xp pro and see
if it would help. Well, it didn't, in fact, it made worse, because I can't even get to login window now, all i get is blue screen
that is telling me that it might be video adapter.

I'm able to get to safe mode just fine but still can't locate the source of the problem.:frown:

Ok, this is what is stated on that blue screen...

A problem been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identifed in teh stop message, disable the driver and check with the manufacturer for driver updates, try chaging video adapters.

Check with your hadware vendor for any BIOS updates, disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your coputer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

The NaiFiltr.sys file is part of the Network Associates VirusScan antivirus software. I think it's your old virus scanner. So first of all try to uninstall it in safe mode.
