Help!!! computer keeps slowing down

here's my system

p4 1.6 NW
p4s Dragon
512 pc2100 ddram (generic)
12X10X32
Internal Zip drive
generic floppy
30 gig 5400 66
80 gig 7200 133
ati 85000
WinXP pro (updated)


I have clean installed twice and it runs fine (for a few hours or so)

then I get slow down. it starts at the boot screen you can see the bar that moves under the xp symbol during boot up drag and studder then when it does boot the windows start sound mubbly. When I install apps you can see the drag in the progress bar as it install. You can tell thing are not moving at the right speed.

Has anyone else had this problem?Does this mean I have a bad board or some conflict or whatever I just don't know what the problem is.

I have a few questions I need you to answer befor I can help you. First how many times does the bar go by on your boot up screen? How long does it take to start up? What do you mean by "When I install apps you can see the drag in the prgress bar as it installs", what do you mean by drag? After you answer these questions I think I can help you.

First thing that comes to mind is cooling...What are your temps like? Maybe the CPU is throttling? What kinda case/fans do you have?

Is there any excessive drive accessing? I have a PC at work with a 9gig 7200RPM SCSI drive. I wish I knew why exactly, but the drive does a lot of excessive grinding, which greatly reduces overall performance of the system. I've done the typical de-frag, which helped. I also tried to search the disk for errors, but it took so long I had to stop it.

Your cpu is probably throttling down because of over-heating. Make sure you used the right amount of thermal compound and then check that the heatsink is seated properly. Seems a few people have been having this problem.
