Ok i have a ASUS A7N8X deluxe with amd xp 3200 with Radeon 9800 pro video this system has been running fine for the last year but the other day storms were about to come through so I uplugged it BEFORE they came through.

Well I go to restart it and it turns on and wont post so I turn it off and then switch back power switch to clear power supply and then switch the PSu back on and it turns right on without me using the switch on the front like I normally would have to do. And acts like its going to start then shuts back off. Then I got it to turn on fine with the button on the front. But then when I go to start it again it gets harder, to get it to actually power up and run without shutting off.

This just keeps getting worse sometime the power button wont turn it on at all and sometimes it starts up and acts like its going to run fine and get good post and all and then about a minute or so after running shuts down.

Sometimes I get it to turn on and get failed memory test and sometimes not. Sometimes I get keyboard not found and sometimes not. I have tried running with no drives other then harddrive (didnt think it could be the problem since have never had bad sectors or crashing). Took out modem also. Since I have two sticks of 512 memory I tried just running each by itself to see if it was the problem and nope. I have never run into this is this thing being taken over by aliens or what LOL>

I have eliminated bad power switch also I switch over to the reset button.
Am I right in thinking its the power supply???? And with the ASUS motherboard will it still be alright and not fried from the bad power supply if it is the culprit???

Paragraphs dude!! Break that run on sentence up

Probably is the PSU. Buy a new PSU and a decent UPS.

Check out the Enermax, Enhance and Fortrons at http://www.ewiz.com/ Then Froogle for a better price.

Sorry about the paragraphs LOL.
Ok so here is what is working for now I got into bios which most of the time it will let me, but not all the time and set the processor back its running at 1 ghz and running at the moment.

Hubby is going to put one of his slower playing games in and see how it does. Did cutting back processor speed cut back on the power demand or could it be the processor if it keeps running fine with it clocked back???

Sorry not a dude LOL but get used to being called that on tech boards

Ok hubby has been running a game that is to be run on 1ghz with 256 ram now for the last couple hours with out a glitch.

And only thing Ive changed is I did notice video settings in BIOs were on PCI and changed it to AGP and set the processor back to show it has a 1ghz.

Going to try to keep turning up processor a little at a time and see if symtoms return.

But now is the real work trying to convice him to get off the game LOL

Did you originally overclock your comp?
I bet that's what killed it the first time...
If not, check your connections, and think about a new PSU.

Thanks for the help already went over all connections. And no over clocking. I have ordered a PSU from newegg so have to wait to see if its the culprit. Crossing my fingers its not the processor.

The system has been running the game all this time so figure not a heat issue, ram, motherboard, video card, or other add ons. So just leaves the PSU or the amd processor.

Might be a redundant response, but have you checked the CPU heat sink? If it's become detatched from contact with the CPU, your computer could run for a short time until it builds up enough heat on the processor to do an automatic shutoff.

Exact thing happened to a socket 478 system I was working on; the OEM HSF clip broke a leg, which broke contact between the HSF and the processor and caused the same situation you're talking about.

Getting a Zalman VF-700 fixed the problem quite handily.

ok update computer is running fine. I have turned up the processor to run at 1.8 ghz now. Turns off and on without hesitation. Going to let it run this way for a bit and see how it does then try to turn it up again.

Asus probe says its running at 44c right now with case open. Going to get some canned air and blow her out tonight to help the temp come down a bit it looks like it needs it.

Only thing I can think of that might have caused this is the BIOs decided to change when it shut down. The video was set at pci instead of agp. Maybe making it act like bad video card??????

Carnage4 the thing hadnt been turned on in days and was shutting down at start. After all the resetting in BIOS the thing ran for hours last night. So dont think it has anything to do with heat. I have 4 fans front one pulling in air 2 back ones one pulling in one pushing out and a side case fan pulling out. Right now side is off .

From BIOs
MB temp is 35c
CPU temp is 49c to 52c
the vcore volt chages between 1.66 to 1.68
+3.3v changes between 3.32 to 3.34
+5v 4.83
+12v 12.54
CPU fan speed 4753rpm to 4963
Power fan 2836 rpm to 2892

Ok hubby gets home tonight and told him to give it a work out. So he starts a game that will push the limits to the settings.

About 30 minutes into playing the monitor loses connection and says no dvi found. Now wont power back on with out different post errors and cant get it back going.

So I feel around and the processor doesnt really feel that hot but the Radeon 9800 pro is real hot on metal shroud around fan.

I also set asus probe to set off alarm at 65c and no alarm went off.

So it maybe a heat issue just not with the processor but with the video card??????????????

The thing kept saying no keyboard detected and failed memory test so let it sit for a bit and put a reg keyboard on it instead of the bluetooth one and starts and running fine again

Blowed it out with air and now running 46c dropped 4 degrees.

The symptoms are too erratic so put a rush shipping on the power supply from newegg. one time it will tell me memory fails then keyboard then the video crashing then getting post that cpu is overclocked when not. I can cut back on add ons and it runs better (less power to run). And figure video crashed since its connected to the power supply also and during game play was needing more power. I can hook up everything and turn up the processor and cant power up and stay on.

But as soon as i disconnect one cd drive and floppy drive with cpu turned down. Runs alright till you reguire more power from the system.

I am running a recording in asus probe to see what the power supply is doing. But not sure what it should be doing when I open things . Like should it go up or down under load??? I started a DVD playing and it went up a bit.
