Hi there

I had a single CPU in my asus CUV4X-DLS board when I installed Win2K pro , now I am getting another cpu , I was wondering that , would it be possible to make Win2K Pro recognise and use the power of dual cpu without formatting and reloading ? I had read somewhere sometime back that this can be done by swapping some files and restarting... please help..thanx for your time..

Ranjan.

I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP TELLING OTHER PEOPLE TO REFORMAT AND INSTALL EVRYTIME THERE IS A PROBLEM THAT THEY CAN"T SOLVE OR WHEN THEY ARE NOT SURE OF THE ANSWER...

Has anyone here ever heard of MS knowledge base? You can find it at mirosoft.com for those that have never been there.

Anyways..sorry for the rant, but it irritates me to see "fdisk, format and install" for every tiny problem. If peeps actually did some research for 5 min, they could actually find the right answer...

A tip: Win2K really likes the two CPUs to have matching steppings. If you use different stepping CPUs Win2K will write all kinds of warnings to the log. Also, remember that not all Intel CPUs are certified for dual operation. Before you get the second CPU you might want to check out the S-spec for both CPUs on Intel's site.

First you have to figure out what device is not ACPI complient. Can you list the system specs of your machine?
Also, you can run SMP without having to be ACPI complient by choosing "MPS Multiproc PC-Non ACPI systems with a dual processor running" when you update the HAL.

I have a CUV4X-DLS board , 78 GB Atlas 10k II disk and a 17 GB segate disk , both SCSI. at present running P III 866. Ram is 512 MB. no cdr drive, only a regular sony cdrom drive. The graphic card is Matrox Mellinium G450 driving a Sony CPDG500.

thanx for your time.

Seems to me that all those should be ACPI complient. If you don't mind me asking: What makes you say that the computer is not ACPI? Does it show Standard Computer in the device manager?

ranjan303:

Here is how I got it to get ACPI support WITHOUT reinstalling on my last motherboard which was ACPI, but was not detected by Windows 2000 as being ACPI compliant.
I booted from the CD-ROM. At the beginning when the blue screen comes up it will say something about Press F6 to load SCSI drivers at the very bottom of the screen(not sure exactly what it says), when you see that, press *F5* instead!!!. You have to be quick because that press F6 message is only there for a bit. Takes a bit, but a new screen comes up that says Windows could not determine your PC configuration, please select from the menu. Scroll through the menu until you find the ACPI options (towards the top) There will be three, ACPI multiprocessor, ACPI uniprocessor, and Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). ACPI multiprocessor is for dual cpu systems, ACPU uniprocessor is for dual CPU systems only running one CPU, and the last one is for just standard single cpu systems.

Select one and it will then ask if you want to install or repair windows (using recovery console or emergency disk, not what you want). Select install. After that it will detect that you already have Windows 2000 installed and will ask if you want to do a fresh install or repair the current install. Select the repair current install option. It will run through what looks like a new install, but all of your setting will remain intact, and ACPI should be on after it is done.

yes...thats one way. but since he is adding the second processor he can just add ACPI then by choosing ACPI Multiprocessor PC and win2k will take it from there. I was trying to help him figure out why win2k didnt detect ACPI during the original insatll.

You can also switch to ACPI on a single processor machine by changing the computer type in the device manager from standard to acpi complient
