I have an Ultrastar SCSI HD which was basically full but I hadn't used it in while. I hooked it up as a slave, and nothing shows up on the drive like it's formatted or something.

I know for sure that it wasn't formatted so I was just wondering what could have happened. Also, what's the best way to extract all of the data from the Ultrastar and copy it to another drive?

i've had usb drives do that.. they don't spin up right. it seems an infinite amount of power cycles sometimes helps.

also if it does not have an assigned drive letter it may do that

If you can see a drive in My Computer (i.e. it has a drive letter assigned to it) but it is empty, and you are sure it was full, then you need to recover data from it.

There are many data recovery software (free or not) which utilize different
techniques so it is worth to try several of them.

i'm just saying i've got a few usb drives you gotta power up/down repeatedly or they show nada. obviously the usb controller or drive (if not combined) is sketch - but i've seen what he's talking about - after a few cuss words and power up/down's the data is intact 100% but otherwise it shows a drive with nothing on it.

time to throw them in the trash

Repeatedly powering a drive up and down is similar to the freezer technique.

You MAY get results, but you MAY just as equally KILL the drive more.

If it is seen in disk management that is a good sign. What kind of file system was on the disc?

Most likely the MBR or MFT has some bad sectors, and you will be able to perform a "Raw Scan" with some software and get all the data out of it.

Once you have put all the data on a new drive, toss that one, if it has done this then it is not safe for use anymore.

I recommend R-Studio, it isn't free though, only $100 and it is well worth it.

JUst curious - you say that the drive is SCSI. Do you have SCSI drivers installed and a SCSI controller?

and terminator don't forget that one! - scsi controllers usually tell you if there is a problem they had SMART equivalent years ahead of ata

oh i how hated scsi. controller on 6, drives on 0-15 unless a cluster then you have another reserved spot; oh and tape drive was on what? man that sucked.

Shit! Bad SCSI flashback from 1994!

Oh God please, make it stop! I'll never mix different SCSI HD brands again, I promise! Wait, you mean I had a bad terminator block? How do those just "go bad"? Help me, I'm having chest pains. I can't feel my toes. Don't let me die with my head buried in an AS/400.

yeah ICE cables from adaptec were the bomb but who knows what brand terminator was stable? if not all heck broke loose. but only at ultra speed not normal wide

alot of people today don't realize sas is still LVD. remember HVD tape drives with 50 feet cables? some a-hole would plug HVD into an LVD card and smoke it.

lol SAS ftw
