Help - dead computer

Any advice would be appreciated:

I recently got a new video card (Sapphire Radeon 9800np) which worked fine (with a few extra crashes) in my old computer. To be on the safe side, I thought I'd upgrade my Antec 300w power supply, and so purchased an Enlight 420w. Today I put it in, hooked everything up and when I hit the power button -- nothing. I checked all the cables and connections and still nothing. So I put the old power supply back in -- now that won't turn it on either.

So -- did I short out the motherboard (an Iwill KK266 with Athlon 1333)? How can I tell for sure? The Enlight did get warm when plugged in. When the power supply (either one) is plugged in and I plug in the motherboard, there is an electrical clicking noise, so something is happening. I checked all the cables, including the power button from the case to the motherboard, and everything seems fine. The load on the supply is not that great -- just 1 HD, 1 CDR, 1 DVD, on board sound, a couple of fans.

Other than mixing and matching components with another computer, is there some way to figure out what has failed? Thanks for any suggestions

Either A) You plugged the enlight 420 in wrong and shorted the board or B) The enlight was faulty or C) some bad run of luck caused your MB to die.

No post means your motherboard isnt even turning on and a warm PSU means there was a short somewhere. A PSU doesnt get warm when you first turn it on, it takes a few minutes.

Maybe you'll want to go back to the basics with a test bed consisting of mobo, cpu/cooling, one stick of ram, power supply, and vid card.

Test again like that. It made my epox work again for some reason... Then I rebuilt my comp, no workie, dismantle yet again, and I finally rebuilt one more time and had it work.

Many thanks to both for the quick responses. Ionizer 86, I tried your suggestion and, lo and behold, had what sounds like exactly the same results. Long story short, I'm now back up and running, using the Enlight for the moment. I'm not any smarter, since I have no idea what happened, but I'm always grateful when they find a way to fix themselves. Thanks again

HW is wierd like that sometimes. I installed an ata card, rebooted, and bios came up with a warning saying my cpu was oc'ed, I ignored it, booted up to xp, then shutdown, and restarted, and the error didn't come up again.
