Help! Desperately trying to set up home network but no sucess!

I am trying to transfer all my files from win 2k server to win xp pro. I got a cross-over cable plugged into NICs of both computers. I have them both under the same workgroup (@home) and they have different names.File sharing and TCp/ip setting enabled on both machines. However, I can't see any one from another, meaning win2k doesn't see win xp and vice versa. Please let me know what I could do to resolve this situation.
Like I said before I have SMC Barricade router and cross-over cable at my disposal.
Please be as specific as you can. I pretty new to networking, so I would really appreciate a detailed description.

See what happens. Also make sure they are using the same protocols, and maybe check the cable.

First, if your workgroup name is "@home", try changing it to something simple like "home", without any special characters.

Second, make sure that both NICs are lit up, showing link status.

Third, install NetBEUI and assign both machines private LAN IPs: assign one machine 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0, the second one 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0.
This must be done in TCP/IP properties for that NIC on both machines.

If I'm not mistaken, those should be backslashes, like \\other_machine.

*shrugs* I can never remember. Im a UNIX guy, so the forward slashes come naturally...

Try pinging the ip address of the other machine.

It says "Request timed out " 3 times when I try to ping my xp machine
