Help distortion effects way too much on Amplitube 3 see post #8

I have googled my butt off trying to find free distortion/effects software for the PC to no avail.
There was FXbox which is supposed to run for like five minutes but all it did was distorted everything so bad that you couldn't tell what the hell was going on.
I have my guitar plugged into my mic jack.
This use to be so easy just get a sounblaster live card and fiddle with the distortion effects in the software but the new SBs don't have any real time effects except reverb according to the sales person I talked to on the phone.
What can I do?

What about Amplitube free?

I remember in Sound Recorder on Windows XP you could create distortion by hitting "Increase Volume (25%)" a few times under Effects, then hitting "Decrease Volume" so it doesn't causing clipping.

Amplitube 3 whenever I plug in my guitar into the mic in jack results in a terrible sound which I've noticed the same thing with FX box and other programs. It is screeching thunderous and sounds terrible and thats before I even turn on the guitar.
Does anyone know why these programs do this and better yet how to fix it?

Too much gain? Try backing off the gain on the effects, and keep the volume low on the guitar.

If you are serious about getting more than a Crap sound you are going to have to spend some $$.

#1--You need a Audio Interface:

ETA: Using a Motherboard Mic In is the absolute Crappiest way of doing it!!

There are cheaper viable options to get a USB guitar input going for someone that just wants to play around. I've had decent luck with my Behringer UCG102, but haven't really used it extensively.
