And oh yeah, I never cared about other people smoking. Respect your fellow man's fix. That was my philosophy. This will never change even if I never smoke again.
I don't either. I've never smoked but have willingly lived with people who do. Smelled terrible but whatever... live and let live. That said, you guys do smell like shit, and make everything in the vicinity of your smoking smell like shit. You just can't smell it. You've nuked all your smell receptors.

I can totally understand why someone who is sensitive to the smell would be pissed. Many - but not all - smokers are disrespectful, self important douchebags that don't give a crap. Apparently they can't fathom that someone can smell something they can't, or they don't care.

I'm glad it's nearly been eradicated in my state and smokers are now pariahs.

Actually, I disagree.

Not hard to pick up the smell of cigarette smoke. This does not mean I call them out and be an ass about it every chance I get, but if it's a really good friend I may make an occasional comment or two.

The benefit of working on PCs is when I go to a smokers house and the inside of their PC is covered in that yellow gooey shit and I realize that same shit is in their lungs. Pretty effective in keeping me from wanting to smoke.

Y'all want to die from lung cancer by all means go for it.

I smoked for 35 years; I have lung cancer but it's not from smoking.

I'm sorry to hear that.

But so you really believe that smoking for 35 years didn't, at the very least controbute, to you ending up with cancer?

Nope. In 2013 I went to see my doctor for reasons of not being able to gain weight; in addition to all the tests she did a chest x-ray and her one word description of my x-ray was "Boring" (Nothing to see.)

What she did find after a CAT scan was a malignant tumour in my right kidney. That was removed but not before a couple of the kidney cancer cells jumped to my lungs. So I have a slow growing cancer in my lungs completely unrelated to smoking.

If you don't mind me asking, (I can't think of a better way to ask this so forgive me if it offends) how long does the Doctor think you have left? How old are you now? Do you still smoke today?

She originally told me ~28 months from diagnosis to death, and that's while being treated. I'm 56. I take an occasional puff off an e-cig.

She's got me on a pretty strong chemo pill; and with the right attitude I can easily surpass her guesstimate. I fully intend on seeing/celebrating my 59th, 60th, and 69th birthdays. And unless I get bored I'll probably stick around for my 79th.

Not if he was a coal miner or asbestos remover.

Actually they are synergistic and smoking will increase the chance of asbestosis for somebody exposed to large amounts of asbestos.

I seriously fucking hate smoking. It is like a constant reminder that mankind is still stupid .

Man, I am glad that you can keep a sense of humor about you. I tell myself I always keep situations light hearted as stressing seems to make it worse, but I'm not sure I would have the strength you have.

Pretty sure I speak for all of us in saying we are here for you if you ever need anything.

Sorry man, your situation is tough. Best to get clarity if any nicotine substitute is allowed by the doctor. If no, maybe doctor can prescribe drugs to help you quit.

Day 2 is going okay. I do miss my smokes very much though. I didn't smoke much before:

One with my coffee.
One in my office coffee break.
One after lunch.
One on my way home.
One in the evening with some beer.
One before I go to sleep.

Only thing was that if I got interrupted while smoking any of my ciggies. I had to start all over again thanks to my nicotine OCD. Marlboro was my brand and I had about four packs a week with one of them entirely spent on Sunday. Monday was another day I might smoke a complete pack, but that was it. I wasn't a chain smoker at any rate. This might have to change now. If I kick this up successfully, I might not even smoke again after my ankle heals.

And oh yeah, I never cared about other people smoking. Respect your fellow man's fix. That was my philosophy. This will never change even if I never smoke again.

Congratulations on day 2. I am a professional quitter so I know what it is like. Sometimes it is all you can do to make it to the next minute, but you do and the urges go away.

As has been said, your food is going to start tasting better soon.

Thanks for that.

My humour and sometimes sarcasm are currently my coping mechanisms. They provide a curtain which helps hide what little strength I actually have. Once I see the current nodules shrinking and/or disappearing that will drive up my strength. Another CAT scan in a couple of months should show.

Really? Grandparents were from Belleville, IL and Grandpa's Dad worked on the railroad from Union station. Spent a lot of time on the Hill too.

I love going back there for the White Castle, Steak N Shake, and Maulls BBQ.

I smoked for 35 years; I have lung cancer but it's not from smoking.

Tobacco use is heavily related to kidney cancer and bladder cancer. In fact in the US, if you have bladder cancer it is from smoking. The same chemicals that cause cancer in the lungs get absorbed, circulate in the blood, filter to the kidneys, and sit in the bladder until you urinate.

Kidney cancer loves to go to the lungs. Most common site of metastasis.
With cytoreductive surgery (removing the kidney it came from) and immunotherapy (drugs that basically give you the flu) there is a 6 month survival benefit. Kidney cancer doesn't respond to chemotherapy or radiation due to a mutation that allows it to basically pump toxins out to keep producing more cancer.

Bladder cancer and Kidney cancer fight over the 6th and 7th most common cancer in the US.
Muscle invasive bladder cancer is a maneater. Without treatment it has 2 year survival. Stage 3 and 4 have about a 6 month survival.
The cure is a radical cystoprostatectomy where the bladder and prostate are removed completely as well as most of the lymph nodes.
Usually a piece of bowel is cut out to make an ostomy and the ureters (the tubes from the kidney) are attached so allow urine to be collected into a bag.

Funny how Philip Morris doesn't feel the need to make a "truth" commercial about smoking making it that you have to drain pee into a bag on you abdominal wall. Or one where they mention it can turn your kidney into an immortal cancer that chemotherapy and radiation can't touch.

I am very sorry about your cancer, but smoking probably played a factor.

Cigarette smoking was associated with a statistically significant 35% increase in the risk of RCC

As to the OP, smoking causes slower healing, decreased mobilization of factors for healing, and increased scar formation. This is especially true for things like ligaments that are fed by small vessels (the kind you nuke with smoking).

We all have our vices, but pretending they don't have consequences is childish and stupid. And spreading misinformation to encourage it to others is malignant.
I rationalize daily that I am robbing time down the road, but I never pretend it is safe or good for me or other to do.

I too had a malignant tumor removed from my right kidney. Any chance you carried a blackberry on your right side?
