i hear the two pins pop when i put the heatsink fan on, but the other two dont, but i tug at it and it seems firmly on there, i push down firmly and follow the directions.

but when i went into BIOS it read 46C after installing windowsxp!

what do i do guys, just got this cpu, dont want it to die on me

fan is running i checked, i can boot up, but after turning it off, then on again, it idles at 46C.

should i get a different fan? reapply heatsink solution? bad airflow in case?

temp in case is reading 29C, cool as its always been

if you're not sure the HSF is making good contact with cpu, get anoter good HSF ASAP.

ill turn it off tonight, see how it is in the morning

worst comes to worst ill get a better fan with some thermal paste

Have you tried checking your temp with Core Temp or the latest version of speedfan as both of those use your CPU's digital thermal sensor as opposed to your motherboards own sensors, which can be innaccurate at times.

Lot's of people with Asus P5's have been reporting odd temperature readings. Some think the motherboard readings are off, no idea if it's true or not. There's a thread on it in here somehwere.

Mukodon, it sounds to me like you need more airflow through your case. And if you're planning on overclocking, you'll definitely need either better case airflow, or at least a better heatsink.

Hey Everyone, thanks for all the help.

So i reapplied the heatsink fan AGAIN, and i think i snapped every corner on this time.

because my CPU is now at : 46C, idling at 45C

motherboard: 35C

Does that seem "regular" to you guys?

and yes, i have a mid-tower generic case, not very cool, im ordering a new case, a ROSEWILL asap.

do you guys really think its the case airflow? i think it is because my first CPU reading was SOO high, and i could tell the fan wasnt on properly, but now its idling at 46C, that seems decent for a generic fan.

dont need this for OC'ing just want a smooth running system for working on.

new case? new fan?

suggestions

hmmm yeah, if it goes over ill have to redo the fan, maybe even scrap off the thermal paste, reapply and try again

since ive been removing this fan 3 times now, do i need to reapply thermal compound? its spread out on the cpu thinly, seems alittle thin, not sure what to do.

Still , with just windows xp running, idling at 45C.

suggestions

Either we who get thease high temps have bugged temp readings OR those who claim to idle at 30c have theirs bugged.
No way some can idle in 30's and same setups in 50's...

Mine E6300, now after lapping the thing iddles at 43c, full load at 63-65 from Easytune. CoreTemp shows over 10c more!
According to intel Allendale will get unstable after 61.1c. (From CPU cover, what ever that means.)
So my 460*7 cpu, wich is prime stable at stock voltage, CANNOT be as hot as 70c, if Intel says it will become unstable after 61.1c.

Mobo is DS3

Yes, every time you reseat the HSF you should clean the chip and the HSF and reapply the thermal paste.

Hey, just ran this: SP2004 Orthos edition

after Test 2 stress test it hit 60C

Test 1, it hit 58C right near the end

it was running for 2 min. 30 seconds.

went from test 1 to test 2

btw: after running test 2, hitting 60C, calmed it down to 55C, then ran Battlefield 2 while downloading in background, ASUS temp gauged popped back up to 60C during 5 min. gameplay

Mudokon, you must not know about needing to attach the stock heatsink while the motherboard is out of the case. Try doing it a couple of times, for practice, without using any thermal compound. You should hear 4 clicks, one for each corner, if it has been installed correctly.

My E6600 is idling at 26C or so. I have 2 intake fans, 2 outtake fans, both running at around 40CFM, and the stock HSF.

edit: It's a Gigabyte DS3 board.

Don't use rubbing alcohol since it contains mineral oil. Use 90%+ IPA only.

You need to arm (ie orient) the head of the pin so it locks. Have you done this?

Now turn the MB over and look at the black center part of the pin. Is it fully extended in every corner?

People throw out temperature reading but they're meaningless without knowing the ambient. My E6600 has never exceeded 40 during a torture test but that's at an ambient of 19. (ie my basement). Take the same system and put it in an upstairs bedroom pushed up to a wall in the summer w/o AC and it could see an ambient of 30 and a CPU temp of 50+.

Don't rush out and buy AS5. It's not some miracle compound. You might get .5 to 1 degree better temp but it doesn't cure a bad mount or poor HSF to CPU mounting surface.

nevermind, im not gonna worry about reapplying paste until i take out the motherboard from the case, make for DAMN sure the HSF is "locked" onto the cpu, then put the mobo back into the case, and see the temps.

i pray its just that the HSF isnt on there right, i want a stock HSF that isnt pushing me to 60C just for playing a video game.

I wonder why Intel listed the max temp to be in the low 60s??? It's not as if CPU cores cannot handle temps in the 80s. It's just making too many people extra worried about core temps now. I have my fan running at 900RPM and load temps are in the high 50s for my E6400. I don't care, as I ran my 3.4 Northwood at full load 24/7 at 70C in my Shuttle.

Relax people, it's not as if your brand spanking new Conroe will erupt in flames. And why are people worried about idle temps???? Run your Conroe at full load.
