also i have an amd athlon xp 2600+ but it says in the bios and windows thats its a 2500+. whats the deal with this? i took it to the shop i bought it from they tested it and it worked fine and said it was a 2600+ which it is

Do you know which version of the CPU you have?
(Thoroughbred or Thorton)

Is the FSB set to 166 or 133?

That error is hard to over come and I've had to format a few systems with problems like that. What power supply are you using in your system?

THE MSI KT4V HAS A 4 PIN CONNECTOR FOR THE CPU. MAKE SURE IT IS IN PLACE
I HAVE THE SAME MB IN MY SECOUND COMP. THIS CONNECTOR SUPPLIES
THE CPU WITH THE PROPER JUICE IT NEEDS.
FRONT BUSS SPEED SHOULD BE 133 FOR AN XP 2600.
THE FRONT BUSS SPEED OF AN XP 2600 IS 133 DOULBLE X2 TO 266.

hey thanks man. are you sure fsb should be at 133? coz most places say it should be at 166. and the 4 pin connecter is it a wire of some kind? what exactly is it? hey thanks for your time.

Both versions of the 2600+ have a 333MHz front side bus, therefor it should be set to 166.

What do you get for bus readings and CPU speed when you check them in the BIOS?

hey i had a look LiLithTecH and that seems to be a major problem. if that seems to be the problem that it doesnt support my cpu then is it a better idea to upgrade to a 2800+ or a new mobo? (seeing that it says the kt4v is compatable with a barton 2800+) the stupid thing is i went out today bought a new 480watt psu and a new benQ fp737 lcd moniter to calm me down lol. the bus reading are completely normal 166fsb, most other things set to auto.
thanks again LiLithTecH its been in a state for months.
so what are your suggestions?

According to their BIOS listing you need v1.7 or higher
to support the 2800+

You may want to e-mail their support and ask about 2600+
(but I think we know what the answer will be).
None of the BIOS Updates ever mention the 2600+

yeah i emailed them yesterday asking what the story with the 2600+ and if any bios updates would do. the disk the mobo came with has this "live update 2" utility which updates bios/drivers accordingly. if the "2" stands for what revision of the bios the mobo came with it should be ok. but if the "2" is what version of the "live update" app then i may to update Bios. can i download the latest bios seperately and then put it on a cd or something and load it on the msi comp since it doesnt have internet hooked up on it?

well ive downloaded version 1.9 if i install it and then put the new cpu in (2800) would it run ok? or when putting a new cpu in would it be better to reinstall windows? i have nothing to lose. and when i format the Hdd to install windows on it, would i loose v1.9 bios that it needs to run a 2800+? or is a bios update absolute and cannot be deleted when formatting?

The BIOS is stored in a non-votaile EEPROM so you need only update
it once. Refomatting will not affect it.

Let us know what type of reply you recieve. They are ALWAYS Entertaining.
