Windows XP patch for Sharing with Vista - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120

If you have 3rd Party Firewall/AntiVirus/AntiSpyware you have to make sure that they are Not blocking LAN traffic.

In addition right click on the Folder that is allowed to share, choose properties, click on the Security tab, and make sure that the Permission Allow/Deny of each user is set according to your needs.

Please Note that Vista When under regular peer-to-peer Network does not allow global Sharing of Drive C:\ and some of the system Folders. It can be set artificially to be shared but it would not be accessed from another computer.

Share only allowed individual Folder, and if the default folder structure is Not good enough leave them as is, and build your own independent structure New Folders under C:\ or D:\ , and Share them as you like.

On the NETWORKING AND SHARING CENTER the part that identify your network, you have CUSTOMIZE, check that if marked as PUBLIC, if it is change to PRIVATE. Probably it will allow to the XP access the folder. But I think you must have a user and password set on the Vista.

There is so many variables involving in this issue. thus that it is hard to help beyond giving the info of how to Share.

On XP it is possible to share C: as an whole. I do not know if you want such feature but at list you can try in order to assess the general sharing (you can also try to activate the guest account).

In addition ICS is a Software Router, it is needed for sharing Internet connection, but it might affect regular sharing. Try to switch it Off until you first resolve the file sharing issue.

i use ICS coz' i use my XP box as a router for the vista laptop...the first thing i've tried was just file /print sharing... but pretty much the same problem...after that i use the network setup wizard on the XP box...set up static IP's for all my secondary NIC's... set-up workgroup ... and the ICS work fine...at first, neither the vista, or the XP box, is visible, if browsed from the other.. but it turns out i forgot to set up permissions..after that ..now i'm still stuck in the same problem from my last post...

thanks though

yup, the NIC that connects to the house router is set by DHCP.. while the one that i use to connect to my laptop is set to 192.168.0.1 /255.255.255.0 for subnet also added a DHCP service for assigning IP' to the laptop (dynamic) been tryin all nite, getting tired might be easier just to install XP on the laptop

I'm having this same problem. I wonder if it's due to the upgrade to XP SP3? My XP is also MCE 2005.
