Does anyone here suffer from bad canker sores? I'm trying to find home remedies as well as over-the-counter treatment recommendations. Thanks.

There's an over the counter medicine they sell called "campho-phenique" (I may have the spelling wrong). It stings like a b*tch when you put it on, but it gets the job done. I've heard rinsing your mouth out with peroxide + water helps too.

They have a prescriptiong drug now (not sure about the name though).
Since it's a virus, I think you just have to wait it out. I asked my doctor once when I happened to have one when I was in his office. He practically said that meds don't work well because it is a virus.

They do have stuff at your local grocery store. The stuff I use is called Zilactin Medicated Gel...it works great. You get a .25 oz tube for about $10.00, but since it works so good, its worth it.

Isla, TG, thanks for the info on Lysine, one of the doctors had heard something about it, but told me to look it up on the web! Anyway, I don't eat any seeds, nuts, peas, or chocolate. Of the four, seeds are the only things I can even stomach.

FYI, here's a little info I found out at Dental Zone:

Canker Sores ( Mouth Ulcers ) :

Are strictly intraoral meaning that canker sores occur only within the mouth.
Are not contagious meaning they can not be spread from person to person.
Are not caused by a virus.

Fever Blisters ( Cold Sores ), on the other hand:

Are preceded by small blisters called vesicles.
Usually occur on the outside of the mouth although they sometimes occur on the inside of the mouth. When they do occur on the inside of the mouth, fever blisters appear on bound (non-movable) sections of the mouth such as the mouth roof.
Are contagious meaning they can be spread from person to person.
Are caused by a virus.

My doctor tried Zovirax (herpes treatment) to prevent them, but it didn't do much good.

hmm, i do take 1666% (that's right, one thousand six-hundred sixty six) percent of daily value vitamin C tablets everyday. i guess that doesn't work for me, i still get those ulcers. well anyways, maybe chocolate does cause them. i've been snacking on lots of chocolates this past week and guess what, those bloody ulcers returned.

the best remedy is prevention. i also suffer from them only when i am under constant stress or accidently bite my tongue or mouth. they are a bitch and hurt. my dad worked in the medical profession before and he recommends eating yogurt on a daily basis. you don't have to eat a bunch...just eat like a spoonful and that should help. the enzymes in yogurt are supposed to help prevent future sores. i also take 500 MG of L-Lysine which is an essential amino acid. the brand is called "SOLGAR" and it works wonders for me...and NO i don't get them from any sort of sexual contact since i am a virgin. i don't know where i got it from, but i do know they are a pain in the ass and hurt. hope my advice helps.

Put salt on them. Pour a little salt into one hand, wet a finger on the other hand, then stick it in the salt so it sticks to the finger, then rub it into the sore. It hurts like hell for about 2 seconds, but then you get that salty flavor and if you like salty stuff then that's good, and then the pain is gone, and by the next day the sore will be gone. (Might have to use salt a few times a day, but it's better than putting something like campho-phenique in your mouth. That stuff's made for outside your mouth cold sores.)

The form of herpes that causes cold sores, from what I read, is so easily transmitted that 80% of people have it by the time they're 18. It can even be gotten from touching a glass that someone else drank out of. So if your parents happen to have it, or your friends or anybody you spend a lot of time around, chances are you're going to get it.

And the mouth ulcers certainly are something that can be spread. My ex-girlfriend had never ever had them before she met me.

Yes, try a diff kind of toothpaste, I've noticed when I had them, certain kinds would make it sting badly.

Also, try this stuff called Kanka (if they still make it, that is...). It creates a coating and seals the sore, and will alleviate some of the pain.

Salt never helps me. It always makes it worse too. My dentist said to not use salt either. It may clean, but it doesn't quicken the healing. After I got my wisdom teeth out, I had a really bad canker sore. I used something called Cank-A, and it went away within a couple of days. I was so relieved.
