I've tried just about everything in this thread. Those things have been a constant companion to me since I was about 6 years old. (I'm almost 32 now).
I have friends who swear by yogurt, but that's something I just cannot stand. I'm tried lysine, every over-the-counter medication I have ever seen. None have helped.
At one point, there was a prescription product who's name escaped me, that came on the tip of a long stick, you applied it directly, it burned like heflin, coated the sore, and the next day way better. But then it was declared not fit for human use. I managed to get more from a vet (its still sold for animals), but it never worked as well again.
I can tell you, stress definitely helps bring them on, and for me, vinegar. If I eat salt & vinegar potato chips, or a subway sandwich with vinegar, I have 1-3 the next day.
My wife swears that applying vinegar directly to the sore will cause it to quickly heal. This is something that I've never tried since vinegar definitely brings them on me. But my wife thinks vinegar is the miracle drug and cures every ailment.
You might think this is crazy, put my solution is to not do anything to it. If I do not look at it, think about it, or acknowledge it in any way, it goes away in about 3 days. If I look at it or mention it in conversation, 5-7 days. If I throw every medication I can find at it, it takes 2 weeks to heal. I'm serious.
