Help! Friend got paste in his socket...

Following erroneous advice from a computer store, he covered his whole CPU(casing and all) with thermal paste. When he removed the CPU under my advice to clean some of it off, he discovered some of it got on the pins and in the socket!

What do I tell him to do to get it out? Or is it not harmful?

Well.... if the CPU is working, then the paste probably didn't do anything bad, so clean it off where u can, if u can't clean it off, dont worry about it. If your CPU refuses to work, then yeah, you should take the socket apar tand clean it all off

Well the thing is that he doesn't have his RAM yet, so he can't test the system to see if it works

Hmm, i would think it wouldn't be too bad unless he was using some sort of conductive paste. BUT, i don't know about getting it in the socket, haven't ever heard of that as a problem before

If he didn't use a conductive paste (conductive includes arctic silver line, any copper or aluminum based paste, etc.) then it should be fine. Some heavy duty watercooler's fill up the sockets with non-conductive paste in order to minimize condensation.

otherwise, if he used something like arctic silver or alumina, it could short out the board and the CPU and void the warranty....

He said that he thinks that it is silicone based...I can't check for myself because he lives a few hundred miles away

What does it say on the paste tube? Just clean the heatsink and the cpu. You can use rubbing alcohol for the heatsink and liquid detergent (i.e., dishwashing liquid like Dawn) with a soft toothbrush to clean the cpu (cpu is waterproof but be gentle with it when washing).

or if he's willing to risk it, stick it in the washing machine (kidding). but that's how they clean cpu's at manufacturing...

It depends on what kind. The regular white stuff is fine, but if its ASII you're in trouble, because that stuff is capacitive and can cause problems.

As matter of fact, Vapochill installation involves completely covering the whole socket with thermal grease.

There is really no way to completely cleaning that CPU short of completely washing it with plastic safe solvent such as Freon TF.

get it wet and then use a soder sucker. Hope that helps
