I got a flat tire on the way to work this am. The AAA guy said I will probably need new tires in about 6 months and with winter coming, I might as well do it now.

Being female, what I know about tires I can fit in a thimble. Any suggestions guys on a good tires for a '05 AWD Legacy wagon. Also, now that I have used the donut - will I have to replace that too?

Thanks in advance!

no, donut is just a temp tire while you get the one either plugged or replaced.

check out www.tirerack.com or go outside and check out what size tire and brand it is.
You can order online and get em installed at BJWholesale or even Costcos really cheap. If your car runs on like 15"s or something, you can probably even just go to costco or even sears and get them pretty cheap.

Dont consider brands , consider individual models

Qualities you need to rank , in importance: Durability/life, Traction in wet, Traction in dry, Noise/comfort, Cost. These things are inter-related.. give them relative weights, and find the rankings/ratings at tirerack.com

how are the other tires tread-wise? If the others were good and the one you got a flat in really did need replacing, I would just get a cheap 25 dollar re-tread.

Live in snow country? Nokian WR's? Supposedly they're all-season tires that perform almost like snow tires, or at least better than most other all-seasons. Kinda hard to find a dealer, though.

dealer locator

Kind of a waste of money and effort to get them if your winters are only rainy and not snowy/slushy/icy, though.

What kind of weather do you drive in normally?

Would you rather purchase online and ship to an installer or buy in the store / install?

Do you have a price range?

Not trying to sound sexist or anything but as a female I wouldn't go with just a retread. If my wife's vehicle tire tread was getting low I would replace them as for mine I would just plug it.

I live south of Boston so snow and ice can be big issues for me. Staying home from work isn't an option even in the worst of weather. I don't think price is a real issue for me, I plan on keeping the vehicle for a while, and I'm hoping I can do the same with the new tires.

With the AWD on a Subaru you need to have all tires within some certain circumstance. So, if you have one new tire and three old ones with a lot of miles, you can develop torque bind or something of the sorts. Using the temp spare to long can do the same thing.

Buy all 4 new tires. If in doubt about this, call a dealer or email Subaru of America and see what they have to say.

I like the Goodyear Tripple Tread or something like that on my Outback.

Are you looking for a set of all-seasons to run year-round, or do you want snows for winter & all-seasons/summer tires for the rest of the year? Most people here run snow tires in the winter, but we're almost in Canada.

I definately would like something I could use year round, and I will replace all 4 tires now.
Are the Nokian WR year round tires? I have a dealer 4 miles away that carries that brand. I'm not sure of the size I would need, but when the sun comes up in the morning I can get that info pretty quickly, and call to see if I could get them put on tomorrow.

Yes, they are all-season tires that are more designed for winter conditions than most other all-seasons. I'm sure other people more qualified than I can better inform you as to the tradeoffs that this design will entail, but according to what I've read on the internet, these are pretty much the best performing all-season tires you can get for the snow. If you aren't an aggressive driver, though, I think the performance tradeoffs in the summer will not be that pertinent to you and the winter benefits they provide will more than tip the balance in these tires' favor. The major drawbacks for non enthusiast drivers are high price, availability (apparently a moot point for you) and somewhat lower treadlife (50,000 mile warranty vs up to 80,000 on some other tires).

They are the only all-season passenger car tire that I know of that have the severe service snowflake emblem (you can get the all-season Goodyear TripleTred for trucks/SUVs as well with the snowflake as well, but they are not made in most passenger car tire sizes).

edit: Sorry, forgot to address noise/ride quality. Unfortunately, I do not remember what I have read on these issues wrt the Nokian tires.

...and if I'm an aggressive driver (hangs head in shame), how would using the Nokians affect my summertime driving?

Ignore just about everything you read here. Call up tirerack and explain your situation, wants, and needs to them. They will be able to match you with the right tire for a good price. You can get an idea of price and use their tire decision guide by yourself, but talking to a human will probably make you feel better and confirm that you are getting the right tire. They'll even be able to ship the tires directly to a local garage for mounting, etc.

Or you can go to costco and get almost the same deal and quality. They can be as good or better than tirerack if you have a memebership, but they don't have as much of a selection.

P.S. In boston you probably want a good set of allseason tires unless you plan on switching tires for summer/winter.
P.P.S Last winter sucked and you didn't really need allseason tires except for a few days.

I'm not the best person to be asking about technical things and matters pertaining to spirited driving, but as I understand it, all season tires sacrifice some maximum dry traction (among other things) for snow traction. The Nokian tires, having greater snow traction than the average all season tire, probably trade more dry traction for snow traction.

Talking completely out of my rear, I would speculate that if you already use all season tires and don't find your tires losing traction, the WRs will probably work fine for you. If you are pushing your current tires to the limit (especially if you have high performance summer tires), then you probably should look into a set of summer (non all season) tires and another of snow tires.

The Nokians have very good reviews everywhere I've read about them. Supposedly they even perform well in the dry (ie spring and summer) though they will wear quicker. Stockers were probably Potenza RE-92's which weren't particularly awesome. The question really comes down to what kinda tires do ya want? All-season radials are good for most areas which don't see much snow and very little ice. If you see a significant amount of the white stuff and the clear stuff, you may want to look into a good set of dedicated snow tires.

For my Subaru, I bought a second set of wheels. Good all-season radials (Uniroyals) on the 15" set for most of the year and good studded snows for when it starts to get rough. If you can swing two sets of wheels to run a summer/all-season and winter combination, it'll save ya a lot of time in the tire shop.

The OP's subie probably came with 195/60-r15's stock. You can run several different sizes but that one is pretty decent and not terribly hard to find. You may find it helpful to read some of the reviews of various types of tires at www.tirerack.com. With it being an AWD Subaru, you'll be able to get going better than most vehicles no matter what tire you're running...however...you also need to stop and turn and AWD can't do any better than a 2WD vehicle with crap tires can.

As a side note, please, for the sake of your clutch-packs and Duty-C solenoid...if you ever need to replace just one tire and the rest are worn more than a coupl'a thousand miles, replace the rest as well. If you don't, you'll increase the likelihood of torque-bind and/or complete loss of AWD capability.

If your tire size is the 205/55-16 you might want to look at the Continental ContiExtremeContact. It's a very good all season performer and can be bought for $80 ea at the Tirerack.

I called around this morning and found I can get the Nokian WR for $160/tire and the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred for $142/tire, with neither type in-stock today, but both available tomorrow. So I've decided to go with the Nokians since there isn't much difference in cost and the dealership is only 4 miles away. Yahoo!!!!

Thanks you all for your input!

You can get the Goodyears for $116/tire (shipped) from tirerack. If you order today then I think you should have them by the end of the week (they ship from jersey).

+1...truly aggressive drivers need dedicated summer/track tires.
