Help!!: I did something stupid...

I have a PII 266 that I just installed a generic CDROM drive in. This is the third drive that I've installed since buying it about 3.5 years ago. It seems that the drive will come up to speed and NEVER slow down (even when the drive is no longer being accessed). This is not the main problem (although it is a problem).

The stupid thing I did is this:
Upon swapping out the drives, I realized that I had left a disc in the old drive. The new drive installed fine. I decided to touch one of the power plugs to the old drive to eject the tray. The computer shut down immediately and will not restart. Did I just fry the power supply? I know what I did was stupid. I did it anyway.

What should I do to get this thing running again? It's a backup computer, so it's loss is not critical; however, my kids use (or should I say used) it for games.

Thanks!

I did that before

I plugged in my burner when the computer was on. All it did was cause the system to shut down right away and I made a small spark. I just unplugged the power supply and then attached the cdrom again and then plugged in the PS and booted up just fine.

It's likely that you've burned something. Never do anything to your computer when it's on. All you can do is try different components that work until you find what is damaged.

I just went up and rechecked the machine. I disconnected the power supply and cdrom, and then reconnected it.

It's working!

Thanks!!

MesBoogie: You dodged a bullet this time. At least you pnly learned an important lesson... instead of an important expensive lesson.

I've found that if you leave a CD player program open it will keep the CD spinning regardless of if it's in use or not.

I plugged in a fan once while the comp was on. Same thing happened. System was fine but...not smart thing to do. Learn from mistakes...

one time i was working on this computer, had it open and all that. it was busy installing windows and i was bored so i took an extra floppy power connector and connected it to the video cards spot for an add on board (those little gold thingys). the power in the whole building went out. i just wasnt thinking. i ran and flipped the breaker. i tried component after component and nothing would work. had to replace the power supply, mobo, and vid card before it ever got to working. woops.

I plug in stuff all the time when my comp is on. Never had a problem before. However if you short something most ps's will automatically shut off.

I have done this more than once

1. Did nothing, just turn the switch off and then back on on the back of the case
2. Blew fuse inside of power supply
3. Ruined 2 8.4GB drives (Have not done it since !!!)

The CDROM spin down is still a problem. The drive light is on even when all programs are shut down and a disc is in the drive. My guess is this is the reason that I've had to replace the drive numerous times. This does not happen with my newer P3 600.
