Talked to someone on the phone yesterday. She had a new Windows 8 laptop and somehow managed to create a PPPoE connection (simulates dial-up authentication through a wired Ethernet connection). Her Internet connection is an always-on cable modem that obviously doesn't use PPPoE. She named the PPPoE connection "NuLink" (the ISP's name). The computer was constantly prompting her to "connect to NuLink" and failing with a message like "could not connect to "NuLink" (even though she was always connected to the ISP and working the entire time). Sure, WinXP users accidentally create these all the time because the Internet Connection Wizard's questions are all wrong...but at least it's no big deal to delete the connection profile that was accidentally created.

How am I supposed to do this with Windows 8? I had to walk her through typing "Network Connections" into search and clicking the correct category, then the correct icon. It took multiple attempts. Then we were able to delete the "NuLink" PPPoE connection she had created.

That doesn't seem like "the right way" or "the Windows 8 way." I wasted time trying to find the proper/Win8 way first. I would open the charm bar and go to Settings > Network, where PPPoE and VPN connections appear for you to connect / disconnect...but there was absolutely no way to delete it from there.

FFFFFFFFFF...

my parents win 8 laptop keeps dropping the connection and if it works it is very slow. And I can sit right there with my win 7 laptop and everything just works...as it always has for any non-Win 8 device.

Vista may have had crappy drivers at launch but in general the changes were good (Win 7 is a vista service pack...). But this Win 8 is just pure crap. Praying that MS lets me reactivate my OEM Win 7 when doing my next build.

To be fair wireless issue could be anything from drivers to hardware,I had router that dropped connection (this was on Win7 and Win8)and it turned out to be faulty,I do know my wireless Intel works great on my Win8 laptop but then its Intel .

You could always do it like I've always done in windows 7. Have her click the desktop to go into traditional desktop mode. From there right click the network icon (plug in this case since she is hard wired) and open network and sharing center. From there you can manage connections and adapters. You could delete the PPPoE connector and be on your way.

That functionality is common between windows 7 and 8.

Another option is to take her to the desktop and press ctrl + x to bring up the hidden menu. Then select the control panel option and navigate from there. There are multiple ways this could get done. The first way is the same between windows 7 and 8 and is a common shortcut I use with many of my customers who have problems. It's the easiest for them to understand.

Right. Connecting and disconnecting is done through the Charm bar, so the "proper Windows 8 way" should be possible without using the Classic desktop or classic Control Panel options (like Network and Sharing Center or Network Connections). I guess I should play around a bit more and figure out how you would create / delete a VPN connection in the Metro UI. Deleting a PPPoE connection is probably done the same way.

Which wireless chipset does it have?

It's a linksys dual band wifi card. Could be an n300. I'll check when I'm in front of my PC.

I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue. Everything else in the house connects at the appropriate speeds. The PC used to when it was on Win7.

So after a couple weeks of learning curve and getting the bugs out I have finally enjoyed my W8 laptop for the last 2 days. Been stable playing FC3.

Yeah, I got over the Win8 hump. I forced myself to upgrade because I didn't want to turn into an old person with a fear of change and unwillingness to learn anything new. So at least my "techno-phobe" crisis has been pushed out a little while longer.

I've used it and it's crap. Nothing to do with "being afraid of change". Crap is crap regardless if it is old or new.

Holy Hell, now you are really going back in time...........I loved learning DOS back in the day. It was hell trying to set up my fighter pilot game (been so long, can't remember the name) Now, most is set up for you, a few "clicks" and your there! Windows 8 is pretty cool to work with and It seems to be getting better, for me at least.
