Hehe. If you pass up .paldo's suggestion, I'd second the P3-700 but suggest Abit's upcoming BX board with RAID-100 built in. If that's a feature you can do without, then feel free to ignore it.
If you are willing to wait a few weeks for them to become readily available, then I would give some serious consideration to Duron 650 or 700, either will easily overclock to 950, and either the ASUS A7V or Abit KT7 motherboard which are the top overclocking boards for AMD.
They should be easily available before the end of August and at a total cost of less than $300.00.
If you don't have a monitor yet, take the extra $300.00 and go for a good 19".
Also, good rumors that AMD will reduce prices by up to 40% at end of July when they will introduce the next speed grades.
Here are some reviews that can help you compare the Duron and T-bird Athlon performance with Intel. Then you can make the decision that you think is best for you.
You'll read about the Thunderbird core Athlon in the reviews and each of these sites has a seperate Thunderbird review also. I prefer the Duron simply because of its great price/performance ratio.
Raid 100 is IDE Raid using the new Drive Speed. UDMA 5 that allows burst speeds of 100 Mb/s
and to achieve the 1 Ghz you will need the cBo stepping of the 100 fsb chips... 7.5 x 100 = 750 7.5 x 133= 1 Ghz..
Also it may not work.. depends o the chip.. you may need the new cCo stepping BUT those aren't even released but they have an expected yiled at 1.16 Ghz
