I think it should be ok if you don't do it too often and it goes all the way down. however, there was a case of woman who swallowed several sticks of gum per day that had to have her gut cut open at ER because a giant ball of gum had formed in her stomach

Drink WARM water. Preferably the warmer. The gum will become loose and pliable. Your best bet is actually drinking vegitable oil because vegitable oil will rejuvenate an old hard, stuck piece of gum the more you work it into the gum, making it EXTREMELY loose and eventually the gum won't even stick to itself. But the thought of drinking vegitable oil makes me gag so I wouldn't suggest it.
