Guy tells me he needs an alternator put in. I ask if someone actually tested it. Of course they did.

So, whatever, I'll take your money and install this easy-ass alternator.

Whoops...only getting battery voltage when the car's running. 0 volts at alternator. Um...yeah, I think there's a continuity issue. But everything either says 'no fuse' or 'fusable link in cable.' No, sirs, you are wrong. I'm holding it in my hand. It is open between the battery and starter connections (left) and alt terminal (post on right).

Googling the Ford part number on top yields nothing but a couple industrial suppliers (under label...'fuse'). No one lists an 'alternator fuse', 'battery cable fuse', 'big damn main fuse,' whatever.

Am I missing some special name for this? And why does Ford seem to think it doesn't exist? Putting a Motorcraft/FoMoCo part number into Google typically yields actual results.

The funny part is apparently the guy already had someone put a used alternator in it. 'Damn, this one's also dead.'

No; you didn't disconnect the battery, then slapped the alternator cable against the firewall, you worthless fool.

Not sure that I can help, but what year and where is this component located.
It appears that there is 2 wires connected on the left, the third is not used, and and the fourth maybe constant power(as you stated above).
Most ford part numbers have a "z" in there somewhere

Sorry, it's a 2008 Focus. Coupe...I didn't even know they made a coupe. Maybe that's the problem. I thought it was weird that when I poked my head underneath, it LOOKS like it's a C1 chassis car, and I don't think Focuses in the US went to C1 until 2010.

It's definitely 2008; build date is 02/08. Maybe I should check the country...

It's all constant power. The battery and starter cables connect on the left, the alternator goes on the ring terminal on the right. It SHOULD always have battery voltage (or charging voltage) on both sides. I don't know how many fuses it actually is..don't quite understand the markings. I guess the middle is B+, with a 100a fuse to the starter and a 200a fuse to the alternator?

Man, what kinda fuckup do you have to be to blow a 200a fuse? He had to have not just smacked something and made sparks- he let the bare wire just dangle on something after he disconnected it. Probably got scared when it sparked and dropped it.

Did I mention this guy charged him more for an alternator than my quote?

edit: Apparently they did make Focus coupes here. I swear I've never seen one...def the old chassis, I guess I never realized that the front subframe looks very similar, battery's in the same place, other similarities...Ford obviously brought lots of stuff over to make babies with Mazda.

There also appears to be a socket in the bottom for a harness.(signals for relay?) Is this a relay or fusible link? Judging by the date stamp, I am guessing this is an '08-'09 Focus? I looked a bit on Rockauto and found nothing like that.

edit: Now that I am looking at it again, I guess the harness is to hold the big amp wires, that go on those spade connectors?

I'm just gonna rig it until we can obtain the part. I noticed the alt cable was long enough to comfortably reach the battery terminal, which has a ring terminal on it. I think I'm just gonna grab a big mega fuse (maybe double them up if I can only find <100a), put one end on the battery terminal stud, and bolt the other to the cable. Seems good enough to me...accomplishes the same purpose (better, at that) and fused safely.

Look under fordparts.com

Pick 2008 ford focus

Look under electrical, lighting, and body

Flasher units, circuit breakers, and fuses

"100 Amp, Battery Interconnect, Cartridge Type, 200 Amp" part# 14526g

It appears to be a different angle that your shot doesn't show (this picture is the back and bottom of what your pic has it oriented as), and it's confusing because it's drawn right beside fuses with no indication that it's of a larger scale, but that looks like it.

edit: rehosted the relevant portion of the image as it won't work hotlinked I guess.

Awesome. Thanks a lot, man. I'm not sure why I couldn't find that...I guess I just didn't look hard enough.

That can happen on that site, as it never seems to work well for me (slow to respond, page errors...). Is it just me having those problems?

Also, since when does Ford have such short part numbers? I've always seen the extra-long ones, like what's printed on the fuse in my picture.

I don't know, but if you just put that part number in the search, it will not locate it based on that number alone.

Oh...there's a little 'information' button that you can click, and it says that they display base part number only. On a system that doesn't recognize partial part numbers. Another 'bold move' from Ford.

The center number is the 'base' part number. The number in front relates to model year, and the number behind relates to revision level. Pretty much any part from that model year with that base (any revision level) will work.
