ok, so I have a vague idea what i'm doing here, hopefully someone smart can help me out. My friend's old motherboard fried, so he got a new one, and asked me to help me install it, because i've done a couple before.
now, we have everything plugged in, and hit the power switch, nothing. nada. there is, however, a test switch on the power supply, and when we hit that, everything starts up, then turns off a few seconds later (i assume this is how the test switch is supposed to work, and that it's not crashing). So we figure the problem must lie between the front power button and the motherboard. Since his old motherboard was at least able to get power, we're thinking perhaps they used a different pin setup in the wires fromt he front power button. An obnoxious thing to do, but it was a Gateway built computer, so who knows what kind of obnoxious things they've done to keep you from tinkering with it.

This probably sounds like a lot of buildup to a really simple solution, but we're thinking we may just need to rearrange the wires in the jack to correspond with the proper setup for the motherboard. The problem is, neither of us has any idea what color wires do what. Hopefully there's a standard here. Our 5 colored wires here are Black, White, Orange, Green, and Blue. As it currently stands, the Black and White ones are connected to the Power Switch Pins, the Orange and Green are connected to the Power LED, and the Blue goes to one of the Reset switch pins. If anyone has any ideas about this, or has an idea from the rest of this long-winded post here that points out something dumb we've missed, please post something here, or fire off an email to fatrob77@hotmail.com
thanks all.

dude i wish i could help and i hope to hell someone has an idea on best way before i start at it again tomorrow.

i gave a friend an old compaq that the mobo quit on and now i'm trying to find the right mix as well. compaq didn't even use normal abbreviations and they have a single wire going to "Lan Led" which to my knowledge doesn't even have a led to display.

i managed to get the board to fire up but it won't turn off with out pulling the psu no psu power switch either.

a freakin pita. i shoulda made him spring 35$ and got the skyhawk that was on sale.

Well, did a search in Google for "how to build computer" and looked at the first 3 or 4 links. There are some there with pictures and free videos that show you how to do.
I've also seen videos on the AMD web site that show you how to place a CPU and heatsink in place.

I'm not sure what you mean by which connectors to put where. In my machine, I hooked up the DVD burner, HD and floppy. Then I connected the fans to the motherboard. And the main connector to the motherboard. What exactly are you trying to connect?

When you press the power button on a computer case, it momentarily shorts the 2 pins on the motherboard that are meant to be connected to the power switch wires. So you can temporarily bypass the switch by taking a jumper and briefly place it on the 2 pins meant for the power switch on the motherboard. If the computer starts, your original idea about the power switch is correct. If it doesn't start, you have got other problems.

To test if you have the right 2 wires for the power switch, (with the power to the computer unplugged) use a voltmeter to ohm out the wires while someone else activates the power switch.

Forgot the obvious ....... if you can gain enough access to see the back of the power switch, you will see what color wires are connected to it.

Also, was this motherboard upgrade done on a fully functional computer? Or was there a problem that caused you to change it?

Lastly, what is the model number of the Gateway and the new motherboard?

Disconnect all the unnecessary front panel wires - all you need connected is the power switch. Sometimes a reversed LED on the front panel will prevent the board from booting, as they are diodes, and thus only allow power to flow in one direction.
Give this a shot first, then work on connecting the LEDs. LEDs are polarized; switches are not.

On the ends of the individual black rectangular connectors, one of the holes usually has a tiny raised triangle next to it. This indicates the positive wire. Check the motherboard manual for polarity of the jumpers.

haha, Victory! Redtransistor, we tried your suggestion about just sticking a jumper on the pins, and it worked, so we just pulled the individual wires from the jack, and took a guess at which ones to stick on those pins. First guess, bingo. his computer now seems to work perfectly.

thank you everyone!
