I recently replaced my linksys router with a dell 2300 wireless. I am still using a wired connection until I get a wireless adapter. After changing to the new router one of my computers will not connect to the internet. Instead of being assigned an IP address by DHCP it uses an automatic private IP address (I think my modem address). I tried to switch back to the other router and it still does this. I tried to manually configure the IP address, but still can't connect to the internet. I could see the computer on the network, could ping IP addresses but not domains.

Do an IPCONFIG /ALL in a command prompt and post the results.

It sounds like a DNS failure, is TCP/IP configured for automatic IP and automatic DNS addresses?

Well I found some help from MS Website

If your local IP address is returned as 169.254.y.z, with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, the IP address was assigned by the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) feature of Windows XP Professional. This means that TCP/IP is configured for automatic configuration, that no DHCP server was found, and no alternate configuration is specified. This configuration has no default gateway for the interface.

Why does it do this, It only happened when I changer to the new router and when I switch back to the router I still have no luck. I have even tried to Disable APIPA on the Entire Computer according to MS

That's the reason I wanted to see the IPCONFIG results. You don't have a good connection to your router from the machine in question. Either a NIC or the cable are bad or not connected properly.

Well I finally got it, several hours later. Good thing I didn't have to pay tech support. Even Linksys couldn't help me get this one. When I tried to release and renew this is what I got.

C:\Documents and Settings\Erick>ipconfig /renew

Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 4 : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

Well a search on Google lead me to this MS Website

I knew I was getting somewhere after I deleted the registry enteries and renewed TCP/IP It showed up as DHCP assogned IP addreess, but would revert back to assigned private address after a few minutes. I decided to export the 2 entries from my registry (similar computer) and import them into the one that wouldn't work. Well that finally worked. Who knows exactly what happened, but I finally figured it out.

Thanks to all who helped

I am having this same problem. As I post this I am reinstalling Windows but only after I read this post. Well as soon as I get it back up I will try the post you made from Microsoft's Support Website.

Thanks for the info.
