Help. low benchmarks

Hey everyone, just a quicky. i just got a new system (22/07/04) and i thought i'd run 3dmark01SE on it. to see how it performed. this is the spec:


Asus k8vse
1GB (2x512 geil PC3200 DDR400)
AMD athlon 64 3200+
ati radeon x800 pro 256DDR3 12 pipelines
win xp pro
catalyst 4.7 ati drivers


my 3dmark03SE score was just 15,705. this seems low? other people with similar systems are quoting 22k!! where am i going wrong?!
and what should i alter in system settings to get this sorted. i have my mem in slots 1 and 3 of 3 slots. slot 2 is empty. and i'm sure i read you cant get dual channel sorted on this MoBo?

ps. running at 1024 x 768 32bpp no AA etc.

play a game on high settings, if you get bad results from that, then ask for help. If not then don't worry about it. You can't play benchmarks anyway.

Also, 2001 is outdated. I know bigger numbers make people feel better about their system. But use 3dmark03 to get a more accurate representation of your system.

Yea if you get good scores in 3DMark03 then you know for sure it's not your card that's giving you low marks on 3DMark01 SE.

Yes it really does seem low . . . . my system is lesser than yours (P4@3.31Ghz/1GBPC3500/Radeon9800xt) but scores higher - 16.6k; same 4.7 cats . . . .

MB chipset drivers installed?

clearly '03 is the one that counts . . . your's should blow away my 6,400

edit: agp is 8x? all service packs and other drivers up to date?; no other issues?/overclocked?

are your ati control panel settings "forcing" AA/AF?

Thats's a stupid way to reason. If he gets lower scores than he should there is something wrong with his configuration and he doesn't get the maximum performance out of his rig. Why pay like a $1000 for a new computer and run it at half speed when you could fix it pretty easily? Sure, older games might run just fine but newer games will certainly play faster on a rig that is configured the right way. The best way to figure out if it is configured right is to benchmark it so using 3dMark for that reason is not bad at all.

Did anyone actually read his post? He says he got 15,705 in 3dmark03, he never says what his score is in 01:roll:

If that's an 03 score, I dont' see a problem, if it's from 01, then he's in trouble

Look at the topic's (sub)title (he mentions '01 TWICE)

(edit to be fair, he DOES mention '03 once; but people with his system are NOT getting 22k in '03 - IMposssible)

You need to install your motherboard driver. On my system I get around 23,500.
Also, make sure to disable AA/AF when running the benchmark.

I'd say about 2/3rd of the people who post these "why is my 3DMark01 so low?" questions don't realize that just because 3DMark01 says AA/AF are "off" doesn't mean it's not being forced by the drivers. Considering that he seems unclear on whether he's running 01 or 03 to begin with, it's not a bad thing to check.

How do i find out about chipset drivers? i cant tell. everything seems up to date. is a week old build!
not sure about agp 8x? the card supports it, the MB supports it, however whenever i go into the ati proprties and try to activate smartgear, says agp is off? how do i check the agp stting that is active?!!!

also, on the asus website. i can d/l new bios. but not sure thats what i need?

i understand the real world performance is the main thing, and it does run nice. but not tested it with anything amazing yet. was waiting for HL2 and Doom 3.

the help IS appreciated! when i go to control panel and check the hardware settings it says:
system board driver is 5.1.2600.0 micrsoft standard one i think?
same with motherboard resources?

how do i get the asus drivers on? cant believe the company that built this for me screwed me over with the drivers!!!!

You need the motherboard drivers which you can download from the manufacturer of the chipset on your motherboard which is made by VIA (it's the K8T800 chipset). Just go to their site and download the latest motherboard driver for that chipset.

just got the drivers (4in1 via drivers from www.via.com.tw) and now agp 8x works! and just ran 3dmark01SE, got 20700!!! shot up by 5000 points! wow!!!!!

ok, ok, what else can i do without overclocking! maybe they forgot other stuff too. any ideas?!

they should make a sticky of that at the top of the general hardware forums. just that line above this one.

thats the problems with us n00bs! we have NO idea how half this technology works! i learnt loads and WAS planning on building this thing. but when it hit equiv to $1700, i decided to get it built for me!! didnt want to make an silly mistakes and wreck the stuff! then i find they forgot to fit fans, told me to take 512MB of RAM out, as 1.5 was too much?! not sure why they said that. apparently system had problems running with it all inside. and now i find THEY didnt install the chipset!

next time i'm building my own.. Mmmm... ati 512MB graphics, 64bit 4.5Ghz 3GB RAM, can just imagine!

2001 SE not 2003.

My score in 2001 was around 19-20k on a 6800GT A64 3000. Which was maybe 1k points better then when I had my 9800. Try 2003 and you'll likely see a world of difference. I think 2001 reaches a CPU limitation/software barrier after 15-19k.


I would download CPU-Z and make sure everything is running at spec. If so, dont worry about it.

just ran cpu-z. says my bios is "american megatrends" 1003.002

should i be worried it doesnt say asus bios?

just ran 3dmark03 as suggested. got 9875. is that good? i have no point of reference on 03, as not many people use it. on the cpu test no.2, i got AV. 10FPS?!!! is that crap?! i was hoping the 3200+ athlon 64 was a strong chip..
