Help! low fps on d3 !

I ran d3 benchmark few times on my comp and I'm getting extremly low fps for my system.

36-42 fps on 1280x1028 with everything on except AA .

and the weird thing is, even when I change aa it doesent decrease the fps.

also, the game seems to be accesing the hd a lot when results in major slowdows.


any suggestions what might be the problem?

Does the system perform as expected in other games/benchmarks, (ie: Doom 3 specific issue) or is it a system wide issue?

What 3dmark 2005 score do you get then? Btw i think you mean 3200+ in your sig, not that it matters much. Sounds like drivers if you are sure that everything else is in order - try different nv drivers, try removing audigy perhaps, and im assuming your NF4 chipset drivers are all installed

edit: it could also perhaps be vsync, which would explain why farcry is fine, while d3 (an openGL game) is not.. Check vsync is turned off.

Have you tried running the timedemo twice in a row?

The reason i ask is because when ever i run the timedemo the first Run always runs pretty bad, it accesses the HD way to much. But then when i run it a second time directly after the first run, the timedemo runs nice and smooth.

Here are my results
First run = ~40fps
2nd run, 3rd run, 4th...etc. = ~80fps (and no HD access during the run)

anywayz, yeah vsync helped...perfomance jumped to 58 fps (but still the same when using no aa - AA X8 which is very weird)

second, I noticed that the first time I load benchmarks/levels it keeps accesing the hard drives...
but the second time I do it it does not and runs more smoothly...

what is this problem?

yeah , exactly...same here...

but when I play the game its the same...all those hd accessing...so It's not really playable...

Did you remember to install your chipset drivers? Also try closing down background programs and system tray icons.

doom 3 needs to build up cache to run smoothly, thats why when running the time demo a second time through it is much smoother, this is not a problem just the way the game is designed. As far as it happening while your playing that should happen only for the first few minutes of play. The game usually pauses briefly the first time it loads a certain effect/ texture. I learned to get in the habit of scrolling through my weapons and reloading then maybe even taking a shot just to load that stuff into the cache before I start playing(doing this really helps). Another thing to do is go through the doom config file(I believe its in the base folder) and set it up for your system youd be surprised how bad it auto detects your system. Since your system is so close to mine YOu should copy and paste my settings into the folder, making a backup of your original in case it doesnt work. I have done this before and it has helped people like you out before.

I didn't get any imporvement...


yet now I always run the demo in the begining and that way it does not acces the hd so much while I'm playing...

You have to run the demo twice to get an accurate score.. FYI, I get 90fps in 1280 HQ on my rig, which is very similiar to yours. Also, make sure you do not force refresh rates in the NV Control Panel. Disable that and run the tests twice

To precache the demos add a '1' to the end of your command. In this case I don't think it's the problem as the performance is poor during actual gameplay, which it shouldn't be.

I didn't see an answer to my question: do you have the latest chipset drivers installed for your system?

I actually reburned my system once because of that stuttering! If you haven't taken this advice please try running as he suggested:

"timedemo demo1 1"

You won't need to run timedemos twice anymore because the system will precache the demo and not access the HD while the demo is running. I was under the impression I had a system problem.

Also make sure you are running the latest chipset drivers which I think is 6.53 now. I had the best luck with the 71.89 display drivers.
