help me analyze the ethics of this situation

Yea actually the only thing anyone has is my word. As I posted in the OP, I tried asking Amazon to look up the original description (as it has since been changed), but they said they were unable to do that. So I can't check what it originally said and neither can you and neither can Amazon.

Just FYI I ended up going to Amazon with this and presenting them both sides of the ethical issue and they ruled in my favor. I've been a good customer to them so I'm sure that helped. I don't know if the seller was intentionally selling counterfeit products, so I don't want to reveal their name or the product. The product no longer claims to be what it isn't. However, I DID also confirm that the original listing DID indicate it was an original. How? When communicating with the original seller, their correspondence listed my original order and the original description that I vaguely remembered in my head. So I did feel more justified in making my claim.

Amazon probably didn't side with you because you are a "good customer". They probably sided with you because it was a mis-sold product.

I've seen on occasion statements on Amazon product pages where an item has been withdrawn from sale because people have complained that the item they have received isn't as described.

They do it because good customer service is rather important to them since it's kind of like their business.
