Processor: Minimum of Athlon Dual core 4200 or Pentium D Dual core
OS: XP Pro
Video card: Dual 256 GeForce 6800 (if too expensive, then top of line non-dual GeForce)
Memory: I would like a 2 GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM, but if too expensive, maybe 1 GB Dual Channel DDR2 with expansion slots (up to 4)

HDD: Two 250 GB hard drives, or one large one with expansion slots for several more drives
DVD: Dual drives 48x CD-RW + 16x DVD-RW with "lightscribe" technology (laser disk labeling)
Monitor: 19" Digital Flat Screen
Good sound card for gaming
Wireless keyboard/mouse
9-in-1 card reader
Plenty of USB 2.0 and firewire ports

A few things just in case:

Get a 7800GT for video card
ddr=amd ddr2=intel
need motherboard, take a look at an epox 9npa for good price/performance
the mobo will have onboard sound most likely, but if you want better or run high quality speakers, look into the creative brands

all newegg prices

7800gt $319 before 30 buck MIR
x2 4200 $400
9npa $80
that will get you started at about $760. then you'll need your storage and case, you could build a good setup for about a grand.

Solid advice I'd say!

My advice...

Antec P180 - $ 124.99 The case is personal of course, but this one's very solid and very silent...
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra - $ 105.00 Great overclocking mobo at a low price...
AMD Opteron 165 - $ 345.00 A slower and cheaper X2, but that's until you start overclocking...
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR PC3200 - $ 169.00 Great RAM at a great price... Decent timings for the money and Lifetime Warranty...
eVGA Geforce 7800GT - $ 275.00 Lifetime Warranty and a step-up program...
Samsung 930BF Black 19" 4ms - $ 369.99 Absolutely one of the best monitors around...
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS - $ 59.99 Needs no introduction...
Seasonic S12-500W - $ 129.00 Many consider these some of the best around... They are at least the most silent ones, apart from passive ones...
2x Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA150 8MB - $ 216.00 Very quiet and much cheaper than taking one 500GB drive...
2x BenQ DW1655 16x48x LightScribe - $ 118.98 BenQ makes great burners... Not as cheap as Nec, but NewEgg doesn't have Nec's with LightScribe...
IOGear GFR280 14-in-4 USB 2.0 External Card Reader - $ 15.99 The internal ones support less types, but cost a lot more...
Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100 - $ 78.99
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro - $ 34.99 With great power comes great cooling If you're planning on overclocking the Opteron, you'd want a high-end and very silent cooler... If not, I'd take it anyway...
Windows XP Professional - $ 139.95 No comment...

TOTAL: $ 2182.87 without shipping LOL FTW...

Your PC will be powerful and very silent at the same time... Hope you like it, 'cause it took me some time to pick the parts... Now you can start changing components

Although the price may "seem" steep, it's essentially what you have been asking for... This comp may be expensive, but consists of the highest quality parts... However, there are other, equally high quality, alternatives that could save you a lot of money...

Antec SLK3000-B - $ 49 Great and silent case for a great price... - $ 75.99
BenQ FP91G+ Black 19" 8ms - $ 249.99 Another great monitor, and for a lot less money than the Samsung... - $ 120.00
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500W - $ 68.99 A modular PSU, so you can pick which bundle of power cords you attach to it... They may not be as silent as the Seasonics, but they sure deliver massive and stable power to your system... - $ 60.01

As much as it pains me to say, ditch the Freezer... - $ 34.99

Take a single Seagate 250GB and maybe buy later another one... More than enough space... - $ 108.00

I wouldn't touch the RAM, because 2GB could come in very handy in the near future... However, a single stick of G.SKILL's 1GB DDR PC3200 could save you $ 89.01... I do know that the mobo supports Dual Channel, but you will hardly notice it and it'll make upgrading easier later...

TOTAL SAVED: $ 488, what makes for a total price of $ 1694.87...

You still much or less have what you asked for, only this time it's a bit cheaper...

I agree with Wenteleefje, except I would keep the Artic Freezer and the 2gb of ram. Also, I think you can buy a 165 for under $300 from websites other than newegg.

lol.. alienware... i used to love them, until i figured out that with the same money you can build a much better computer. granted i like their cases.. i think it is a waste of money. unless you simply must tell everyone that you bought and alienware and show off to everyone whom doesn't know much about computers. heh.
