I was running a P3 in a MSI 6163pro motherboard. (i440BX chipset) The processor was a 1Ghz with 256K L2 cache and 100Mhz FSB. It was a Flip Chip type, not the slot 1. Anyways, it's fried now and I need a replacement. I checked on pricewatch, and the cheapest this processor goes for is about $200. I want to know if I can put a Tualatin chip in the board instead. I know they are 133 FSB, but if they were to be underclocked to 100Mhz would it work? I thought I heard something about Coppermine and Tualatin being uncompatable, but I'm not sure. Another option I was thinking of was a Celeron 1.4Ghz since they already use the 100Mhz FSB, but I don't know if that core will work in this board either.

Just get a socket 370 Tualatin converter, they are about $10 these days. Grab a Celeron FCPGA2 and you're set.

The motherboard is actually a slot 1, but I had a MSI 6905 convertor that allows you to put a 370 chip in it up to Coppermine. Should I be looking for a FCPGA2 to 370 convetor to plug into my 6905, or should I get a FCPGA2 to slot 1 adapter? Do they even make such things?

I believe they make a slot 1 to FCPGA2 converter. It may be awkward, but you could still put the socket 370 converter on the slot 1 to socket 370 adapter.

You can get a slot1 to FCPGA2 adaptor. In fact, I have one with a Celeron in it. Interested? PM me.

You can also check into an older Athlon XP system, the CPUs and boards are pretty cheap.

I'm in the same position with a P3-500 flip chip and an ASUS CUSL2 MOBO.
I can get an adapter and a Tualy which I believe has limitations.

I can get a faster XP+ with a simple MOBO for less without the Tualy's limitations
or
OC a Mobile XP+ with a quality MOBO for a little more $.

The OC'd Mobile XP+ would be far faster than any Tualy and have no limitations.

Going the AMD route would also require new RAM and a decent HS/Fan.
