Is there any software that will list the ips that are connected to my router? Or anything that would let me see if my neighbor really is stealing my wireless. Im going to put up a password on my router anyway but I don't want to just cut him off, I want to catch him doing it:evil:

Edit: O yeah, the router I am using is a Linksys befw11s4. I have 3 computers. Only one(my laptop) is connected wirelessly. But the power chord fried this weekend so I will not be able to use it until I get another.

You could use SuperScan so scan your network range for any hosts on it, but if he's running even the Windows Firewall, it won't detect him properly. The router itself should have a page in the configuration that shows connected users. If not, there are other ways of finding out that get complicated. I'm sure I'm forgetting another easy method, but I'm tired and can't think of any right now. Perhaps someone else will soon enough

Log into the router and find the tab for connected devices or the mac address table and see what the netbios name is listed next to the mac addy.

1. You can find an extra IP and MAC number in your Routers DHCP Server that might be left by an other computer.

2. Wireless Computers can log to foreign unprotected Access Point and the owner might not be even aware of it.

3. There is no way to know who it is unless a MAC number is left and you get a court order to seize the alleged Intruder and look at his computer MAC number.

4. So use your security and calm down. If some one is trying to hack your Wireless with the security then you can call the police and let them deal with it.

5. If you ??Catch?? some one and try to do any thing on your own you are the one who probably going to end on the short side of the stick.

Ok I see what you are talking about. Theres a thing called DCHP Clients Table and it shows everyone who is connected. Im gonna set up a password so hopefully he will not be able to get in any more.
Thanks for your help guys:thumbsup:

Well it isn't so much that you need to password your router as you need to activate your WEP/WPA enctyption and MAC filtering. So that only the MAC addresses you specify can get an IP from your router.

Yeah passwording your router only restricts him from changing the settings on your router. You need to stop him from gaining internet access.
First turn off the Broadcast SSID part. Second as stated above use MAC ID filtering to only allow your devices to connect. Third if you are really paranoid use WEP key encryption to protect your transmissions. I personally think the third is overkill for a home network but if you want it its there. Fourth put up a sign that says 'I know you're stealing my cable bandwidth.'

You could try this...

find the IP address that is getting assigned to him an go run start //IPADDY/C$ if you can get into the hard drive I am sure there would be some nice .txt files that would give away who the computer belong too..

Good Luck!

BTW, I have comcrap with an open network. I welcome people to "BARROW" my network pipe. No big deal for me I guess I'm a hacker that likes to share.

Edit: Beware that snooping on other computers could land you in jail. Tho barrowing your friends wireless is still open for debate.

Good Luck again.

Wep isn't worthless, and is should be on top of the list, above SSID broadcast and mac filtering.

MAC filtering is largely useless since MAC addresses can still be enumerated even if the SSID is hidden. This would allow others to change their MAC address to an "allowed" MAC and use your connection.

how safe is it to only allow the wireless router to hand out the same number of dhcp addresses as machines you use?

i have 2 machine so i restrict my routers dhcp feature to hand out two addresses only

why don't you just disable DHCP and set your two machines with static ip addresses. that will be even more secure.

That, and change the IP block to something nobody uses, plus depending on your router you may be able to change the last octet of the router itself and use something besides .1 or .254 that everything else uses.
