Help me catch my neighbor

Neighbor is spooked, or won't do it on weekends/holiday when I'm home. Also, we just got some rain via heavy thunderstorms so that is also throwing the likelihood off. Just have to have patience.

I didn't spend a dime, and my roommate is doing the surveillance. I ran the sound recorder last night but haven't checked the mp3 yet. Also, I said it's only for a week during the heat wave and I'm just turning that valve off and calling the water company to send someone out.

I did check the meter and there didn't seem to be any leaks.

All in all, it turned out to be a good thing because I've been meaning to look into getting general surveillance cams to help protect my valuables.

What happened to the guy that was throwing trash on your garage/roof?

After I paid him a visit I told him I have him on cam and would take him to civil court and he stopped. Although when it snowed he wrote fuck you in the snow in my front yard. The cam I have is pointed in the back yard and this was in my front yard. When ever I see the guy I stair him down making sure he knows I'm watching him. This guy is late 60's and I think he got some mental problem.

Without reading through all the posts, I'm gonna suggest a hunting camera aimed at the faucet. One of those motion activated deals that hunters strap to trees.

The problem with this is:

1) Neighbor has shit stored in my shed so he's allowed to be in the yard
2) Since the hose is on the side of the hose facing his, a trail camera would go off just by him moving in his own yard. Or if he walks in my yard by the hose to get to the backyard.

So I basically just have to catch him using the hose, which he and I both know he's not allowed to use. However, he may think I wouldn't suspect him since we have a decent relationship. So far he's played it smart, but we'll see if he slips up sometime before Sunday (when I'm just shutting off the outside water).

I say don't shut the water off until you catch him. It will be more amusing for us that way.

Why not put a meter on the faucet? That way at least you'll know if the hose has been used, then you can go through the trouble of capturing him in the act.

Good idea, but my prof sound recorder will take care of that. Plus he'd probably see the meter and it'd scare him off.

From the wording, it sounds like he maybe just looked for actual leaks around the meter and didn't get inside it to see if the meter wheel itself was spinning.

I looked at the wheel and it wasn't moving.

While it didn't cost any money, I kind of wish I didn't stay up all night for most of the weekend. Feel crappy this week.

Or he could just remove it before use and reinstall it after use.

What is a sound recorder going to do for you?

I put it right up to the pipe in the basement that runs to the outside faucet. It's very loud when it turns on. Sound recorder is direct evidence that he is using it, and a lot more than I have to go on atm (just theory).

KLin, the problem is that if he's doing it at night then motion sensing is kind of tough to detect (IR/flash cam will reflect off the window). Although I'm setting one up for daytime just in case.
