I had older Dell and ASUS "5ms" screens and they were great for gaming with no overly aggravating blur or jitter. about a year and half ago I was on a mission for a new decent priced screen and was so disappointed. EVERY one of the 60hz LED backlit screens sucked with horrible jitter when panning the mouse around. I always tested the exact same spots in games for fair comparisons and my old Dell and ACER were just fine but anything new I tried was basically unplayable garbage in comparison. even a 2ms ASUS gaming monitor was horrible looking.

I now sit here with an unopened 144hz VG248QE that I just bought but I am too scared to open it. lol

Don't be afraid toyota. It's a great monitor. 2D/3D Lightboost looks amazing IMO. No jitter or aggravated blurring. Smooth as silk.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but don't you need to utilize the 3D aspect in either the BenQ or Asus monitors you need to use the Nvidia 3D glasses kit. I mean, the ASUS VG278H is the only one that seems to come with the glasses and IR Emitter, so for the others you would need to buy the full kit to utilize the 3D functionality for 3D Gaming or 3D Movie viewing, right? Does that mean that you need to have a Nvidia GPU to utilize that function or will the Lightboost hack act as a work-around so you can use an AMD GPU instead?

I'm just wondering because like others here I too am looking into getting a new monitor and am trying to decide between 120Hz TN, 144Hz TN, 1080 IPS, or 1440p IPS for my media viewing and gaming needs.

Hmm, I've only ever previously owned (sold it later - current monitor is the non 3D Asus VS247H-P which is like $160) the VG278H but had no idea other 3D monitors didn't come with a kit.
I'd assume you'll need to buy a full kit

of course most 120/144 hz monitors dont come with a kit. why add cost for something most will never even use when you can just buy it separately?

Well to give an update, after reviewing and reading some more I decided to go with an IPS monitor instead. I went with this Asus VX279Q http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am blown away by the colors, they are so vivid. I fired up Far Cry 3 and Mass Effect 3 and I have no problems with lag or anything. I only play single player anyways. The colors in the game are great. I'm very happy with the choice. I very much appreciate all the advice everyone gave, thank you.

Very cool congrats but personally I think 27inch is a bit on the larger side for a 1080p computer monitor.

True, but my eyes are not what they used to be. My son uses my old 24 inch and I really do prefer the 27 inch.

As a side note when I bought the monitor yesterday the price was $299 and today it is $259. I chatted with Amazon and they gave me a refund for the difference, love Amazon.

I think you made a decent choice. Yes IPS can lag more than TN (in general) but unless you're a competitive fps gamer you should always think hard about whether suboptimal color is going to bug you long term.

Holy wow. That coupon just took me from eying the 24" QE ASUS into purchasing the BenQ. Thank you for posting!

Hey nice! Jack, you planning a little LightBoost 'terminal' for gaming to go alongside your OC'd IPS? Please report your impressions as I've been dying to know just how much better the motion blur reduction really is

After reading all the reviews and reading people's experience and advice there is definitely not a one size or one monitor fits all needs. For me going from a TN panel to an IPS panel was like going from a SD TV to a HD TV, night and day. Also I don't like fooling around with settings that much so messing around with vsync and MHZ settings for different games for a 120HZ monitor didn't appeal to me.

Now I can also see why people would like the 120mhz monitors, from what I saw in Microcenter the fluidity was super smooth and impressive. In the end for me I prefer better colors, but that's just me.

Exactly my plan. I want to have the best of both worlds so I can FPS with 2D Lightboost and play more casual games on the Overlord OC. And then both are useful for actual work at home, too. I will definitely report back once I have tested the hype myself.

I presume the older crowd (45+) prefer the color saturation of an IPS screen over the 120/144hz offering. I know I certainly do and I've had both LCDs.

Hmm, good to see that you found something that you enjoy. Have you noticed any ghosting or motion blur on it? I ask because like you I am alos looking for a new gaming monitor and am torn between the high refresh rates of the 120Hz and 144Hz monitors and the high fidelity and color quality of IPS monitors, especially since it is going to be used not only for gaming but also for work in my home office and for HD media viewing.

For you IPS guys, there is a 30% off coupon for dell outlet monitors. The 30" Ultrasharp is $655, the 27" Ultrasharp is $420.

Those are all Refurbished Monitors. I would be really wary of purchasing a refurbished monitor even if it has been "factory refurbished" as I don't know what was originally wrong with it and if that issue has truly been fixed.

I have been trying it out with Far Cry 3, Crysis 2 and 3, Mass Effect 3, Call of Duty II black ops and I have not seen any difference in regards to ghosting or lag compared to my Viewsonic 27 inch that had 2ms response time and also 60hz.

Got the XL2720T yesterday afternoon. One stuck pixel that's not distracting, just noticeable. I plan to work on it and hopefully get it un-stuck.

That aside, installed Strobelight and used Chrome to check Mark's test site and it was impressive being able to clearly see everything moving so cleanly and so fast.

Played a couple games (L4D2 and BF3) just briefly to get a first impression and thus far I'm liking it a lot. It's definitely a strange thing going from 1440p back to 1080p, but wow do things play smoothly.

Hopefully I'll get more time to play this weekend, but first impression is that this was worth the money for my experience.
